A naturally analytical professional with a lifelong interest in electricity and electrical engineering, Dr. Carroll excels as a professor of computer science and engineering for the University of Texas at Arlington, where he also serves as director of the Computer Engineering Program. Prior to obtaining his current positions, he served as the dean of the University's College of Engineering between 2000 and 2011. Throughout his career, he has also gained valuable expertise in education through visiting, associate and assistant professor roles with the University of Washington, the University of California Berkeley and Auburn University.
Before utilizing his knowledge in an academic setting, Dr. Carroll worked as an engineer for General Dynamics Corporation and Texas Instruments, Inc., a research assistant in the Electronic Materials Research Laboratory at the University of Texas ay Austin, and an engineer for Armco Steel Corporation during the summer of 1962. Although his career has been filled with highlights, he is especially proud of helping the University of Texas at Arlington's College of Engineering experience enrollment growth by more than 50%. Research expenditures also grew from under $10 million per year to more than $40 million, and the faculty grew by 60%.
In the early years of his career, Dr. Carroll earned a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1964, 1966 and 1969, respectively. Over the years, he also became a licensed professional engineer through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and the Alabama Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. To remain aware of ongoing changes in the field, he aligns himself with the American Society for Engineering Education and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). In previous years, he maintained membership with the Association for Computing Machinery and the National Society for Professional Engineers.
In light of his considerable expertise, Dr. Carroll has contributed to more than 100 articles, as well as two editions of the textbook, "Digital Logic Circuit Analysis and Design." For his professional accomplishments, he has received a myriad of awards, including several certifications and a Meritorious Service Award through the IEEE Computer Society, the NASA Technology Innovation Award, the Contribution Award through the University of Texas at Arlington's College of Engineering, and a Lockheed Martin Excellence in Teaching Award, among many others.
