Mr. Niehuss is an attorney, investment banker and civil servant who is acclaimed for an impressive career divided between New York City and Washington. He currently serves as the director of private infrastructure finance at the international Law Institute in Washington where he also teaches courses in project finance and public private partnerships and serves as a member of institute's board of directors. His teaching experience also includes over a decade as an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan Law School and four years as an adjunct professor at the Peking University School of Transactional Law in Shenzhen, China.
Prior to his current position, Mr. Niehuss served as the general counsel of the Export-Import Bank of the U.S. and the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington. He was also an international investment banker at Merrill Lynch in New York City for more than 10 years beginning in 1977, during which time he focused on project finance, emerging market equity funds and international bond offerings. During the early 1970"s, Mr. Niehuss held positions as a deputy assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of the Treasury, an assistant director of the Council on International Economic Policy at the White House, a loan officer at the World Bank in Washington and a legal advisor to the Government of Zambia in Lusaka.
In the 1960's, he practiced law with Sullivan and Cromwell in New York City where he gained experience 10 corporate and securities law. Over the years he authored or contributed to several scholarly articles and authored a book entitled "International Project Finance in a Nutshell" now in its third edition.
Influenced by his father who served as professor of law, Dean of Faculties, and Executive Vice President at the University of Michigan, Mr. Niehuss pursued an education at Amherst College, graduating with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1958. Continuing his studies, he obtained a law degree at the University of Michigan ill 1962 and then attended the London School of Economics in the UK and the International University of Comparative Sciences in Luxembourg.
Mr. Niehuss is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a non-profit organization that focuses on U.S. foreign policy and international affairs and the Metropolitan Club of Washington. DC.
