Having accrued more than three decades of success in the classroom, Dr. Herakovich became the Henry L. Kinnier professor of civil engineering at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1990. Excelling for decades, he taught courses in applied mechanics and mechanics of composites at Virginia and, previously, in the department of engineering science and mechanics at Virginia Tech. At Virginia he served as the director of applied mechanics and director of the Center for High Temperature Composites. While at Virginia Tech he was the founding director of the NASA-Virginia Tech Composites Program, led the college of engineering initiative to be the first public university to require personal computers for freshman engineering students, and served as the first director of the Institute for Materials Science and Engineering of the Virginia Center for Innovative Technology. Throughout his extensive academic career, he advised fifty-four graduate students, taught mechanics courses at The University of Kansas, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Illinois Institute of Technology. He has lectured in many countries around the world.
A prominent figure in his field, Dr. Herakovich served as chair of the Applied Mechanics Division and vice-president of Basic Engineering for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, secretary and president of the Society of Engineering Sciences, secretary of the U. S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and U.S. delegate to the International Union on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Herakovich has made substantial contributions regarding mechanics of composite materials, microprocessor-based data acquisition, finite element analysis, thermal and radiation effects and, among other areas of the field, shear test methods, negative Poisson ratios and fiber orthotropy. He also made notable contributions in the realm of plasticity research.
Widely published, Dr. Herakovich authored three books, beginning with "Mechanics of Fibrous Composites" in 1998, through John Wiley and Sons Inc. He later released "Mechanics IUTAM USNC/TAM" in 2016 and "A Concise Introduction to Elastic Solids" in 2017 through Springer. Dr. Herakovich has also edited several conference proceedings and recently self-published a memoir.
While serving as the head football coach, athletic director and track coach at Rose Polytechnic Institute (now Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) during the early 1960s, Dr. Herakovich also taught mechanics courses in the civil engineering department. His athletic background includes leading collegiate football as the top scorer in the nation in 1958 (168 points in eight games), Captain and Most Valuable Player of the undefeated Rose football team that won fifteen games in a row over two years, and Little All-American recognition. His 21.0 points per game in 1958 continued to be the national record for thirty years. He was named the Most Outstanding Athlete at Whiting High School in 1955 when he was quarterback of the Indiana state championship football team and played basketball and baseball. He concluded his athletic career as a football official in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Herakovich was later inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, the Rose-Hulman Athletic Hall of Fame and the School City of Whiting Buckley Wall of Fame. Dr. Herakovich was named as a fellow of the Society of Engineering Sciences (SES), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the American Academy of Mechanics (AAM). He also was a member of the Society of Experimental Mechanics.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering at Rose Polytechnic Institute in 1959, Dr. Herakovich subsequently earned a Master of Science in mechanics at the University of Kansas in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy in mechanics at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1968. He also served for seven years in the Army Reserves, beginning as a second lieutenant, and departing at the rank of a captain. Recognized numerous times for his leadership and expertise as an educator, Dr. Herakovich received the Frank J. Maher Outstanding Educator Award from Virginia Tech in 1986. He was later bestowed with the Belytschko Award from the ASME in 2005 and an Alumni Recognition Award from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2010.
