Throughout his career, Mr. Frank exhibited a natural aptitude and appreciation for news reporting and journalism. During his secondary education, he was both managing editor and editor-in-chief of his high school newspaper and there decided upon a professional career in journalism. Following his high school graduation in 1971, he enrolled at Marquette University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and political science in 1975. Next, Mr. Frank obtained a Masters of Science in journalism from Northwestern University in 1976.
By 1979, Mr. Frank began assembling a notable resume, working for a number of major news outlets. Between 1983 and 1987, he served as a correspondent for Business Week, covering financial futures and options markets in Chicago as well as banking and insurance. After running his own publishing company where he produced the Financial Futures Analyst newsletter in 1987 and 1988, he went to work as an editor and speech writer for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Other top positions he held in the 1990s included editor-in-chief of the National Provisioner magazine, of Beverage Industry magazine and as an editor and associate publisher of Card Technology magazine, then owned by Thomson Media. In the early 2000s, Mr. Frank served as editorial director for WOMMA, the word-of-mouth marketing trade association, and as the Midwest bureau chief of PRWeek magazine, writing about the public relations business, from 1998 until 2005.
Mr. Frank subsequently became editor-in-chief of Collections & Credit Risk Magazine, editorial director at the American Marketing Association and was on the adjunct journalism faculty at Roosevelt University in Chicago for roughly 20 years.
In 2012, spurred by his own heart disease issues, he founded and served as editorial director of the online publication/blog, the No Salt, No Fat, No Sugar Journal (nosaltnofatnosugar.com) which seeks to aid people with heart disease change their diets to include more heart-healthy choices.
After nearly four decades in journalism, he reinvented himself in 2013 as a live theatre performer and dramatist who specializes in writing and producing plays. That year, he and his wife cofounded the Evanston 2nd Act Players with the mission of showcasing new talent for the stage in stories that deal with key second acts in people's lives. Today, Mr. Frank serves as president and artistic director of the Evanston 2nd Act Players, which he took into online production of plays when the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020. He has quickly learned new skills as a video editor and online producer, overseeing the theater's purchase on video editing software, an online production platform and a streaming software suite.
Mr. Frank's other post-retirement passion has been his volunteer work with Mended Hearts, a national peer-to-peer support group for heart disease survivors. As a testament to his efforts, Mended Hearts recognized the chapter he started in Evanston, IL. as the 2020 Regional Chapter of the Year and honored him with the Regional Newsletter of the Year Award and the Regional Volunteer of the Year award. He continues producing his blog as part of his outreach work to those with heart issues.
