Ms. Scholtus is an elementary school educator and literacy specialist celebrating more than three decades of service to her students and profession. A third-generation teacher, Ms. Scholtus dreamed of becoming an educator from a young age. With the support of her family and high school coach, Ms. Scholtus attended William Penn University in Iowa, earning a Bachelor of Science in elementary education with an additional endorsement in Title I reading instruction in 1989.
After one year as a full-time substitute teacher, Ms. Scholtus became a Title I reading specialist for Pekin Community Schools in 1990. She continued to focus on specialized literacy support until 1998, when she transitioned to teaching fourth grade language arts and ELA leadership for third through sixth grade. Ms. Scholtus continues to teach with Pekin Community Schools, including administrative leadership and new-teacher mentor duties.
In recognition of her career record of instructional leadership, Ms. Scholtus has been named an honorary member of Educator Leader Pathways to STEM and the People of People Program. She is a former membership chair of the National Education Association and vice president of the Executive Board of the Hedrick Library, and remains active in charitable initiatives with the American Heart Association and the Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness.
