In this capacity, he helped link existing European research strengths in Service Science and Engineering and helped build new competence for multi-disciplinary, collaborative approaches to addressing challenging and significant research and education problems in this field. He set up mechanisms for co-operation across Europe so as to achieve a common vision of 'strategic service engineering research domains' and associated R&D road-maps.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Papazoglou's main research interests have included such areas as software modeling, design and development, distributed computing systems, database and information systems, large data integration and management, big data analytics, e-business integration, software services, cloud computing, and business process management. Shifting his focus in more recent years to pursuing emerging technologies, industrial engineering, product engineering, product lifecycle management, smart applications and smart technology solutions for healthcare and manufacturing, he continues to make great strides in the field. Dr, Papazoglou is considered as one of the original promulgators of 'Service-Oriented Computing. His research efforts have notably been disseminated through well over 200 articles in various scientific journals and international conferences as well as 23 (authored and edited) books. He has also served in various editorial capacities for several scientific journals, and is notably the author of the 1989 book, "Relational Data Management," the 2006 book, "e-Business Fundamentals: Organizational and Technical Infrastructure", and the 2012 book, "Web Services & SOA: Principles and Technology".

He continues to collaborate with the organization, leading various conferences, assisting in designing and evaluation for the Framework Programs for Research and Technological Development (Framework 5, 6, 7 and Horizon 2020) and consulting with the EU. Dr. Papazoglou is also a reviewer for several national and international committees throughout many continents, including the North America, Australia and Europe. He chaired several international conferences and is the co-founder of the international conferences on Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS) and Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC) as well as the co-founder of the monograph book series for MIT Press in Information Systems and for the Springer-Verlag book series in Service Science.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Papazoglou received a Bachelor of Science in electronic engineering, with honors, at the University of Dundee in Scotland in 1978 and a Master of Science in computer systems engineering at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland in 1979. Returning to the University of Dundee years later, he completed a Doctor of Philosophy in microcomputer systems engineering in 1983. Supported by various professional memberships, Dr. Papazoglou is a golden core member and distinguished visitor of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' Computer Society.
