In the beginning of her career, Ms. Schleese earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University Guelph and was chosen to teach English to German high school students on an exchange program. She also worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as a liaison between U.S. aeronautical engineers and European Space Agency ·engineers through the American Consulate in Bremen, Germany. During this time, Ms. Schleese became well-versed in marketing and international trade, facilitating import and export requirements for raw materials and finished goods between government facilities and companies.
Ms. Schleese subsequently met her husband, a certified master saddler and an internationally ranked three-day event rider at the time. After he was asked to be the official saddler for the 1986 World Dressage Championships to be held for the first time outside of Europe in Canada, they decided to establish their company, Schleese Saddlery Service Ltd, which specializes in crafting innovative custom saddles for women riders in all disciplines. Distributing on five continents, they strive to improve performance for both the horse and the rider by ensuring long-term back health with properly-fitted saddles. After obtaining a Master of Business Administration from Queen's University, Ms. Schleese found additional success as the Managing Director of Saddlefit 4 Life as well as for Schleese.
As a respected professional in her field, Ms. Schleese was honored among Profit's Top 100 Women Business Owners in Canada for several years. She has also been presented with a Global Traders' Award and a Merit Award from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. She was further celebrated as OWIT's (Organization of Women in International Trade) Entrepreneur of the Year; York Region's Woman Entrepreneur of the Year for Export Excellence and most recently as Female CEO of the Year for Women in Business by the International Trade Council in Chicago. In order to bolster her professional qualifications, Ms. Schleese began a Doctor of Philosophy in animal science in 2018 at the University of Guelph.
In addition to her primary professional duties, Ms. Schleese co-authored a book with her husband, entitled "Suffering in Silence: The Saddle Fit Link to Physical and Psychological Trauma in Horses." She has also been featured in numerous business books by various authors and her company has been cited and educational articles published in many different equestrian publications for their exceptional efforts. Having developed great connections in the equestrian industry, she has attributed her professional success to her hard work, as well as her ability to overcome obstacles.
