Since coming of age, Mr. Sithy has garnered a laudable reputation learning, leading and innovating in the culinary arts. His passion for food began at a young age, inspired by his mother's lifelong dream of opening a restaurant. Having endured periods of financial hardship since childhood, Mr. Sithy always aspired to own a business that could support his family and contribute to his community at large.
Mr. Sithy began working in restaurants as a teenager, quickly becoming one of the youngest executive chef-owners in the region. His previous ventures focused on Thai and Asian fusion dishes in casual settings, one of his restaurants was named TripAdvisor's number one restaurant in Southeast Wisconsin. Today, he considers Sweet Basil, opened in early 2020, to be his most accomplished concept to date. Built on the strength of his family recipes, Sweet Basil serves a mix of family-style Laotian street food dishes such as Thai curries and noodle dishes, and updated versions of classic American-style Chinese food with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and authentic flavor profiles. Sweet Basil ranked on Thrillest's Best Restaurants in Milwaukee/Where to Eat in Milwaukee list and the family's recipe for Pad Garpow, a Thai spicy basil stir-fry, was featured as MKE Lifestyle Magazine's Dish of the Month in the August 2020 edition.
As a part of his commitment to business ownership as a pillar of community involvement, Mr. Sithy makes quarterly donations to area charities, contributes food and consumable supplies to homeless shelters and food banks and provides free meals to families in need on the first Wednesday of each month. While Sweet Basil has been impacted by the closures and economic changes caused by the coronavirus pandemic, he looks toward the future with plans to further enmesh himself in community involvement, events and a potential expansion of his business, through which he hopes to reach more people with his food and his mission. Mr. Sithy holds an Associate of Arts in Business Management from Milwaukee Area Technical College.
