Ms. Salvesen is a gifted teacher and administrator. Her role as exhibitions officer with the Scottish Art Council from 1968-1971 involved the teamwork of planning and producing shows with their attendant press releases, catalogs, posters, lectures and outreach -- which she adapted to administering the Jon Schueler Studio from 1971 to the artist's death in 1992. She then took on the responsibility of running The Jon Schueler Estate of oil paintings and works on paper as curator, facilitating further solo and group exhibitions with museums and gallery dealers in the US and the UK, and beginning the work for an eventual catalog raisonné. Currently she is working on the preparation of the Jon Schueler Archives (papers, photographs, films, and tape recordings) for use by visiting scholars, and for the eventual hand-over of the Estate to become The Jon Schueler Foundation.
Two of her publications relate to art history research; the editing, with Diane Cousineau, of Jon Schueler's copious manuscripts to become The Sound of Sleat: A Painter's Life, published, to critical acclaim, by Picador USA in 1999; and Artists' Estates: Reputations in Trust, Rutgers University Press, 2005—a series of interviews with widows, sons, daughters, partners, and paid administrators of artists' estates. She also partnered with Erik Anjou in 1999 to produce and co-direct the film Jon Schueler—A Life in Painting, used as an introduction to the artist's work by museums, and supplementing the existing films made in 1972 and 1981.
Her teaching career has always run concurrently with administrative positions- parallel initially when she taught art history, before branching out into courses on the history of gardens and the designed landscape. Her summer travels have always been linked to both subjects, taking her to countries in Europe as well as China and Japan--feeding the formation of new courses and expanded subject matter. A concentration on American gardens led to her guidebook, Exploring Gardens and Green Spaces from Connecticut to the Delaware Valley, WW Norton (2011). As an independent art and garden historian, she has lectured for museums, libraries and art clubs throughout the greater New York Metropolitan area since 1990, and taught at the New School University (1986- 1994), the New York Botanical Garden (1994-2011) and the Bard Graduate Center (2006) before joining New York University in 2011 as adjunct assistant professor. Her political inclinations were expanded when she was executive administrator for Architects, Designers and Planners for Social Responsibility from 1985-1988, while her role as board member of the Queens Botanical Garden (2002-2008) enlarged her garden management knowledge.
Ms. Salvesen was educated in the UK at the University of St Andrews (MA 1966) and the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London (MA 1968). She spent a year in the US (1964-65) as a scholarship student at Sweet Briar College, VA, before relocating permanently to New York in 1976 with her husband, the American artist, Jon Schueler. She became a US citizen in 1992.
Ms. Salvesen's incredible career has been supported through memberships with several significant professional organizations: she has been aligned with ArtTable, the College Art Association, the Garden Conservancy, Metro Hort, NY, the Royal Oak, English Heritage and the Gardens Trust (in the UK). A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Salvesen has been cited in over 15 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
