Dr. Barris celebrates a career in optometry and neurophysiology spanning more than three decades and nearly 50 frequently-cited journal articles and papers. Drawing a wealth of inspiration from his great-grandfather, who had distinguished himself as a physician in his own right, he has been driven primarily by a deep and abiding desire to help others through the medium of psychiatry and public service. His research has been published in Documenta Ophthalmologica, the Annals of Neurology and the Journal of the Acoustical Society of American, among many others, and has included breakthroughs in diagnostic protocols and interpretation used in the treatment of ocular melanomas and stimulation of cortical potentials. Dr. Barris holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Rochester, and decided to dedicate his career to research after working in a psychiatric hospital during his junior year, feeling that the potential for innovation lay more in scientific work than in clinical applications.
Dr. Barris earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the City University of New York in 1976, and completed a three-year fellowship in ophthalmology at the University of Florida. He briefly taught at Queens College and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine before accepting an assistant professor position at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, where he would remain from 1983 until 1988. Dr. Barris returned to Queens College as a research assistant in psychology in 1989, and spent the next five years at Michigan State University, serving as an assistant professor of internal medicine and an assistant research professor in biochemistry. He finished his academic career at Nova Southeastern University, teaching and researching in neurophysiology until 1998.
Well regarded in his field, Dr. Barris is a grantee of the Research National Society to Prevent Blindness, the American Cancer Society, and the National Eye Institute and a postdoctoral fellow of Fight For Sight. Since his retirement from academia, he has served as a village trustee, merging his background in public health with his experiences advocating in Puerto Rico for responsible and sustainable municipal infrastructure development. In his leisure time, Dr. Barris enjoys opera and vocal music.
