SEATTLE, WA, December 16, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Tyler C. Folsom, PhD, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Folsom has enjoyed a long and successful career in engineering that dates back to 1973. An expert in computing, he has excelled as an advocate for automating micromobility since 2007. He recently founded Micro-AV SPC in Seattle to realize his vision. He has also been an affiliate professor at his alma mater, the University of Washington, since 2013, where he is renowned for his collaborative research efforts with students building light, inexpensive self-driving vehicles.
Supported by an industrial background that includes proficiency in configuring special purpose tools, including automotive manufacturing, industrial part inspection and machine tool control, Dr. Folsom gained recognition as the president and co-founder of Cogneta, Inc., in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, an organization that focused on commercializing autonomous driving technology. Among other noteworthy roles, he was a senior software engineer and project manager for QUEST Integrated (formerly known as Flow Research) in Kent, Washington. As an educator, Dr. Folsom held a faculty appointment at DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, Washington, before moving to the University of Washington in Bothell. He spent the summer of 2004 at Northwestern University in Xi'an, China, teaching Computer Graphics and Machine Vision to undergraduate students and Game Artificial Intelligence Techniques to graduate students.
A seasoned researcher of nearly 50 years, Dr. Folsom has served as a principal investigator on numerous projects with the National Science Foundation, the U.S. military and Fortune 500 companies. Over the past 15 years, he has focused his efforts on autonomous urban vehicles that maximize energy efficiency, while providing a safe and convenient ride. He runs the open-source Elcano Robot Vehicle Project. Over the last decade, he has guided volunteers and students to design the electronics, software and actuators to control an electric tricycle. The project was notably funded through a $75,000 Amazon grant. In 2005 and 2007, Dr. Folsom participated in the DARPA Grand Challenge, a prize competition for American autonomous vehicles funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense.
As a published writer, Dr. Folsom has authored an e-book, titled "The Goddess at the Helm: Where Technology is Taking Us and How Activists Can Change the Course" in 2017. He has contributed more than 50 magazine articles, technical papers and scholarly articles in his areas of expertise. In addition to his writing efforts, Dr. Folsom has presented many of his published papers at various conferences throughout the United States and in Europe, Asia and Canada. His wife, Dr Frances Solomon, and he have organized and led several workshops in Japan that aimed to empower women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Highly educated, Dr. Folsom received a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Villanova University in 1970 and a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Maryland in 1972. He wrote software for the U.S. space program, then took a two-and-a-half-year break to bicycle around the word. Returning to college, he achieved a Master of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1980, worked ten years and then completed a Doctor of Philosophy from the same institution in 1994. Dr. Folsom is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Washington.
Dr. Folsom is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Heavily involved with the organization, he has been active with the Computer, Computational Intelligence, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Social Implications of Technologies and Robotics Societies, and chaired the Seattle section interest group on fuzzy logic and neural networks. Dr. Folsom is also a member of Toastmasters International.
