Drawing upon years of expertise in physics, space science, astrophysics, remote sensing and more, Ms. Blackburn excels as a flight software engineer for Arctic Slope Regional Corporation at the NOAA Satellite Operations Facility. In addition to generating procedures to run against spacecraft simulators, she develops command procedures, telemetry display pages and real-time plots, and oversees pre-launch testing of GOES-R/S subsystems as it relates to validation of FSW, command and telemetry databases. Previously, she worked for the same organization as a lead flight operations simulation engineer on the NASA NPP Flight Vehicle Simulator, ensuring operation readiness and providing support to the Mission Operation team in the validation of products to be uploaded to the spacecraft.
Earlier, Ms. Blackburn gained valuable expertise at NASA as programmer analyst II, systems engineer and senior programmer and analyst. Between 2008 and 2012, she oversaw real-time data taken at the Savannah River National Laboratory and supported testing of satellite instruments, including the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite for the National Polar-Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System. Over the years, she served in various engineering and programming positions with ITT, Hines Industries, CharityUSA, the University of Michigan's Radiation Laboratory, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. An expert in her field, she also holds a Bachelor of Science in physics from West Virginia University and a Master of Science in space and planetary physics from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Backed by her considerable expertise, Ms. Blackburn has contributed to a plethora of publications and presentations, including "Ion Temperature Anisotropy Limitation in High Beta Plasmas," "The Mode-separated Pulse Profiles of Pulsar Radio Emission," "Exams in Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy" and "A Search for Dwarf Novae in Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae." Driven to remain aware of changes in the field, she aligns herself with the Society of Physics Students, The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the American Physical Society and the American Astrophysical Society.
In conjunction with her work, Ms. Blackburn also volunteered on the USGS-funded project regarding the building and maintenance of a clean-up facility treating acid-mine drainage on Ice Pond Run at Friendship Hill National Historic Site and the WVDOH project, which tested overall watershed quality and the impact of highway construction on groundwater.
