Since 2006, Ms. Coleman-Madison has served the people of Alabama's State Senate District 20 as an elected representative and lawmaker. Prior to being elected to the Alabama State Senate, Ms. Coleman-Madison served in the Alabama House of Representatives, following active service on the Birmingham City Council dating back to the 1980s. She credits her passion for public service to the values instilled in her by her parents and grandparents. Growing up in a working-class family, Ms. Coleman-Madison developed a personal understanding of hard work and the value of community collaboration at a young age.
Ms. Coleman-Madison remained active in local community initiatives until leaving to attend college at Alabama A&M University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in education. She completed her studies at the University of Alabama with a Master of Arts degree, spending the next 12 years as a special education teacher for the Birmingham School System. As an educator, her advocacy for teachers extended to work as a lobbyist for the American Federation of Teachers. Senator Coleman-Madison is also a licensed Realtor. Currently she serves on the board directors for the Lakeshore Foundation, Positive Maturity, Alabama Department of Youth Services, Jefferson County Coroners and Medical Examiners Board, the Alabama Land Bank Authority, and was appointed to the Birmingham Region Community Investment Cooperative District board.
Ms. Coleman-Madison is proud to be a trailblazer in Alabama history, serving as one of just four women in the Alabama State Senate, where she serves as Senate Minority Caucus Chair. During her tenure Senator Coleman-Madison sponsored several signature state Acts, highlighting women's health care, and the rights of persons with disabilities. In addition to her policy work, Ms. Coleman-Madison has been the City of Birmingham's Director of Compliance for the Americans with Disabilities Act since 2003. She is the former regional vice president of the National Foundation for Women Legislators, second vice president of the National Black Caucus, executive committee, National Organization of Black Elected Officials, Birmingham's Parks & Recreation board, president, Birmingham Visitors & Convention Bureau board, the American Red Cross Birmingham Regional Board, Alabama Head Injury Foundation, Alabama Industries for the Deaf and Blind, regional office, the United Negro College Fund, volunteer, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and named as one of fifty 2019 Top 50 Over 50 List. Ms. Coleman-Madison is a certified disaster preparedness trainer and volunteer. She credits her success to hard work and faith, and hopes to continue her policy career for years to come.
