Aligned with Uppsala University in Sweden since 1991, Dr. Sharma has garnered a laudable reputation as a professor of neurobiology. Additionally active as a research scientist in the neuropathology lab, he studies the passage of tracer transport across the blood-brain barrier or (BBB), a condition caused by stress to the brain and spinal cord. Elsewhere in the field, he serves as a docent in neuroanatomy in the division of anesthesiology and intensive care medicine at the Uppsala University Hospital, a role he has held since 2004. Dr. Sharma formerly contributed for five years as a research scientist at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India.
Dr. Sharma's current research includes studying neuroprotection and neuro-regeneration as it relates to BBB stress, trauma and drugs of abuse in health and disease. His investigations on brain pathology and neuroprotection in different models have notably been supported by the Laerdal Foundation of Acute Medicine in Stavanger, Norway, and his exploration of drug abuse has been funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Sharma was also awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation fellowship by the German government in support of his research on hyperthermia-induced BBB dysfunction in the laboratory of Dr. Jorge Cervós-Navarro, a Spanish pathologist, histologist, neuroscientist and faculty member at Free University of Berlin.
Dr. Sharma has disseminated many of his findings by authoring and co-authoring close to 400 peer reviewed articles and a dozen monographs. He has also contributed 70 book chapters and edited 15 scientific volumes, including "Novel Therapeutic Advances in Glioblastoma," in his area of expertise and has served several editorial roles for scholarly journals. In addition to his contributions as an author, Dr. Sharma has served as an expert evaluator and board adviser for the Ministry of Health Science Foundation and the Medical Research Council and University Commission of Grants in Europe, the U.S., Canada, China, Singapore and Australia. He has also been active on various committees and at area conferences locally and internationally in such places as Hungary, Italy and Switzerland.
Born in India, Dr. Sharma studied locally at Bihar University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science, with honors, in 1973 and a Master of Science in 1976. He subsequently acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in neurosciences at Banaras Hindu University in 1982 and a Doctor of Medical Sciences at Uppsala University in 1999. Dr. Sharma is an elected fellow of the American Institute of Stress. He has also been an active member of several other industry related organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Society of Neuropathology and the New York Academy of Sciences. In recognition of his many years as a teacher and researcher, Dr. Sharma has been bestowed with nearly 20 awards, as well as several fellowships.
