Having retired in 1993, Ms. Doak worked as a volunteer of education on behalf of Main Street United Methodist Church in Tazewell. She began in this capacity following her tenure with the Tazewell County Department of Social Services as a social worker for the foster care system, operating in the roles of a foster home coordinator and a drug abuse consultant between 1989 and 1993. Additionally, Ms. Doak previously served as a business manager and counselor for the Guanzon Medical Clinic in Bluefield, West Virginia, and as a teacher for McLain's Business College in Bluefield and Tazewell County School Board.
In 2016, Ms. Doak began writing a monthly publication, titled "Letters from Home," which is emailed to a growing number of former Tazewell citizens. She also wrote a booklet in 2018, "Historic Tazewell, VA, Main Street Walking Tour." Profits from the booklet go to the Tazewell County Historical Society. Ms. Doak submitted a presentation in the book "Down in the Holler: A Living History of Southwestern Virginia," which was published in 2014 by Hometown Memories, LLC. Her article, "Growing Up Green" received a Second Place Award among 474 entries.
Among her numerous leadership roles in civic and community activities, Ms. Doak was a counselor of Parents Anonymous in Tazewell, the President of United Methodist Women, member of the Board of Trustees for the Methodist Church, member of chancel choir, appointed to Tazewell Industrial Development Board, retired as Chairperson of the Tazewell County, Wythe County, and Buchanan County Public Guardian Program, helping to write bylaws for the Virginia State Conservator Policy. Ms. Doak has been a member and volunteer of Historic Crab Orchard Museum since 1988, N.Y. Academy of Science, Social Work Practitioners, Heritage Hall Family Council, member of Tazewell County Family Assessment Planning Team for the Dept. of Social Services (12 Years), member of Tazewell County Historical Society board of directors, member of Daughters of American Revolution, Season's Four Garden Club, and. charter member of Tazewell Eastern Star.
Studying at the University of Virginia after receiving a Bachelor of Arts at Bluefield State College, in 1987, Ms. Doak is also a Certified Court Mediator through the Conflict Resolution Center, and studied as a Drug Abuse Counselor at Princeton University School of Dentistry and Medicine and North Carolina School of Medicine. A celebrated Marquis listee for six years, Ms. Doak has been featured in Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of American Women.
