Driven to teach from an early age, Dr. Matson has excelled today as an assistant professor of physics with South Dakota State University since 2017. In previous years, he gained valuable expertise in similar positions with the University of Minnesota from 2014 to 2017, DePaul University from 2007 to 2014 and Central Michigan University from 2005 to 2007. Over the years, he has taught a plethora of classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including introductory general physics, optics, sound and acoustics, classical mechanics, introduction to quantum theory, and electrodynamics.
Although his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Matson is especially proud of publishing two books, "Earthquakes: The Sound of Multi-Modal Waves" in 2016 and "Sonic Thunder: The Sound of Multi-Modal Waves" in 2018. Alongside his books, he co-authored several articles, including "Measured Scaling Properties of the Transition Boundaries in a Rotating Suspension of Non-Brownian Settling Particles," "Wake Field Flow of a Sphere Falling in a Finite Duct" and "Pattern Formation in a Monodisperse Suspension of Non-Brownian Particles." To remain aware of changes in the field of physics, he aligns himself with the Sigma Pi Sigma Honor Society in Physics and the American Physical Society.
An expert in his field, Dr. Matson earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from Humboldt State University in 1999. Five years later, he received a Doctor of Philosophy in experimental physics from Oklahoma State University and pursued postdoctoral studies at Emory University. In recognition of his professional expertise, he has been honored many times, earning an Outstanding English Composition Award, an Excellence in Writing Award through Humboldt State University and a 2002 Distinguished Research Award through Oklahoma State University. In the near future, Dr. Matson intends to publish additional books and resume his research program.
