Since her formative years, Ms. Benavides has harbored her interest in Spanish language and culture. She subsequently obtained a Master of Arts in Spanish and South American literature from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Ms. Benavides eventually concluded her academic efforts with a Master of Arts in psychology from the Pacifica Graduate Institute.
Ms. Benavides began her career as a coordinator of the domestic violence team and Spanish-speaking women's group with Child Abuse Listening Mediation (CALM). She further excelled as a mental health practitioner for the County of Santa Barbara's Department of Alcohol, Drugs and Mental Health. Prior to her retirement, Ms. Benavides also worked as a bilingual psychotherapist.
In addition to her primary professional responsibilities, Ms. Benavides had also taught English and Spanish in seven different countries throughout her career. She also dedicated two years of volunteer efforts with the Peace Corps. As a respected voice in her field, Ms. Benavides additionally published a book, titled "The Longer I Live, the Wilder it Gets: A Memoir of Adventure" under the name Norma Royale Wilder.
Ms. Benavides has been incredibly proud of her ability to overcome an abusive situation in her life, which inspired her to help others in similar situations. She has attributed her exceptional professional success to her persistence. In the coming years, Ms. Benavides plans to write another book.
