Ms. Hopper is a former state legislator who became involved in politics many years ago. Relocating to Colorado from Wyoming with her late husband, a former attorney, she raised her family before being elected to serve as a Republican precinct chairman. Her pathway in political affairs then led to her inauguration in the Colorado Senate in Denver in 1987. Elected as one of five women in the 35-seat Senate body, Ms. Hopper adjusted quickly and diligently earned the respect and credibility of her peers during three terms in the Colorado Senate between 1987 and 1999.
During her political career, Ms. Hopper found success as the chairperson of the Health, Environment, Welfare and Institutions committee from 1989 to 1999. She was later recruited as a member and the chairman of the Criminal Justice Commission as well as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Influential in sponsoring a bill for child health care, the Child Health Plan successfully provided insurance coverage to children of parents who worked but did not qualify for health insurance by their employers or by Medicaid. Ms. Hopper was also involved in the passing of a bill that legalized gambling throughout several districts of Colorado.
As a leader in her community, Ms. Hopper has supported her children's education by remaining involved with the Parent Teacher Association. She was also active as a leader of the Girl Scouts of the USA and a member of Saint James Episcopal Church in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Furthermore, Ms. Hopper has served on the national board of Partners for Access to the Woods, the board of advisors of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Partners for Access to the Woods and the boards of the Rose Foundation, the Historic Georgetown Inc., the Colorado Preservation Inc., the Colorado Independent Ethics Commission, the Spalding Community Foundation and the George W. Hopper Family Foundation, for which she had been noted as the founder.
Born in Dayton, Kentucky, Ms. Hopper earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Wyoming in 1956. In support of her career, she has been a dedicated member of P.E.O. International, a philanthropic organization devoted to the advancement of women. She is also affiliated with Kappa Kappa Gamma. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Hopper has been featured in the 49th through 59th editions of Who's Who in America, the 23rd through 25th editions of Who's Who in the West and the 16th through 24th editions of Who's Who of America Women.
