Originally intending on pursuing a career in engineering, Dr. Adams began working in a pharmacy as a teenager. Over the years, the pharmacist would claim how he should have studied medicine, and encouraged Dr. Adams to pursue that career path. Upon completing his Doctor of Medicine at the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980 and pursuing a residency in family practice at the Charlotte Medical Center from 1980 to 1983, he became licensed to practice through the American Board of Family Medicine.
Dr. Adams married his wife in medical school and after residency practiced in Wadesboro, N.C. During that time he felt called to pursue missionary work and relocated to Taiwan, where he served as a physician with OMF International for nearly 30 years. Once he returned to the United States, he channeled his international expertise in a position closer to home, working as a physician for Duke Health, where he cares for patients in a Family Practice clinic. One of the many highlights of his time in Taiwan is meeting the president of Taiwan and being honored with the Presidential Service Award.
To remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Adams aligns himself with the American Academy of Family Physicians, who elected him a fellow of the organization. Ultimately, Dr. Adams aims to retire and devote more time to his local church and to ministry in the area.
