After more than 45 years in academia, Dr. Rabideau retired as professor emeritus of chemistry at Mississippi State University in 2015. A talented teacher and administrator, he served for six and one-half years as an administrator on campus as the provost and vice president of academic affairs, and then returned to teaching for four more years. Renowned for his expertise, he is also an acclaimed researcher whose more recent studies have included bowl-shaped aromatic hydrocarbons, which are notably referred to as "buckybowls," a term coined by Dr. Rabideau. Dr. Rabideau's work has been widely recognized with articles published in numerous newspapers, professional magazines and scholarly journals. He has also authored approximately 130 of his own articles in various referred scientific publications.
Dr. Rabideau's distinguished record of leadership formerly included faculty appointments at Iowa State University, where he served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and was also a group leader for the Ames National Laboratory. Prior to this appointment he served as dean of the College of Basic Sciences at Louisiana State University for nine years. He began his independent career at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), where he devoted 20 years as a respected professor and chemistry department chairman. As an extension of his career at IUPUI, Dr. Rabideau spent one year at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C., as program officer for organic dynamics within the chemistry division during 1989. Also, during his tenure in Indianapolis, Dr. Rabideau held several offices within the Indiana Section of American Chemical Society including Chairman and National Councilor.
Dr. Rabideau received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at Loyola University Chicago in 1964. He soon after completed a Master of Science at the Case Institute of Technology and a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1967 and 1968, respectively. This was followed by two years of postdoctoral work at the University of Chicago in the Ben May Laboratory for Cancer Research founded by the late Nobel Prize winner Dr. Charles Huggins.
Elected as a fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Chemical Society, Dr. Rabideau also held noteworthy positions as a member of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences in support of his career. Dr. Rabideau's success over the years has earned him numerous prestigious awards. Among them, he received an Outstanding Alumnus Award by the Department of Chemistry at Loyola University Chicago, was named Alumnus of the Year by the Department of Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University, and was named Chemist of the Year by the Mississippi Section of the American Chemical Society. He was also brought back to IUPUI in 2010 to be commencement speaker and receive the Science Medal of Distinction from the Purdue School of Science in recognition of his earlier leadership in their department of chemistry.
