Since establishing the firm in 2000, he has utilized his considerable experience in the chemical, petroleum refining, mining, pipeline, and oil and gas industries as a consultant and expert witness. He also advises domestic and international corporate clients. such as power and utility, manufacturing, consumer products, and pharmaceutical companies regarding environmental, health and safety program management and strategies that are cost-effective and compliant. In addition to his work with the firm, he serves as managing director of Carbon Finance Strategies – a start-up that prequalifies sites and potential solar photovoltaic facilities to investor-grade standards on technical, financial and regulatory matters.
Prior to founding his firm, Mr. Friedman gained valuable expertise in the field in executive positions with Elf Aquitaine, Incorporated, ARCO Chemical, Elf Atochem (now Arkema) and Occidental Petroleum. As a senior executive, he created and enacted a variety of data management systems and programs to review and manage environmental, health and safety programs, and remained involved in global warming issues both domestically and abroad. Mr. Friedman began his over 40-year journey in environmental law as an attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice in what is now the Environment and Natural Resources Division.
In pursuit of his dream of a career in law, Mr. Friedman earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Columbia College in 1962. Three years later, he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Columbia Law School. Upon graduating, he was admitted to practice through the District of Columbia Bar, the State Bar of California, the Pennsylvania Bar, the U.S. Supreme Court and several other federal courts. Driven to remain aware of ongoing changes in law and environmental, health and safety, he has aligned himself with the environmental section of the American Bar Association, the steering committee of the Corporate Environmental, Health and Safety Management and Sustainability Roundtable, of which he is a founding member, the American Law Institute, and the advisory councils of the Environmental Law Institute and the environmental programs at Columbia Law School.
Although his career has been filled with highlights, Mr. Friedman is especially proud of his book "Practical Guide to Environmental Management" being renewed for 12 editions. The book is known throughout the industry as the standard reference for the subject. Due to his extensive expertise, he has guest lectured at Columbia and USC law schools and taught classes at the University of California Los Angeles and Temple University law schools. He has also contributed to a plethora of books and publications, including "Environmental Management Systems-Managing Cost Effectively While Assuring Compliance "Climate Change and Legal Issues for Auditors," and "Environmental Management for the Future: Environmental Auditing is Not Enough." In the coming years, Mr. Friedman intends to reflect on his work from a long-term standpoint and continue his activities as long as he is physically able.
