PORTLAND, OR, December 22, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Jan C. Cavanaugh, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Cavanaugh celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Cavanaugh has excelled as the Conservator of Paintings at Jan Cavanaugh Paintings Conservation Services in Portland. Establishing her business in 2002, she had garnered a wealth of expertise from working as the curator for the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery at Reed College in Portland. Dr. Cavanaugh also flourished in academia between 1985 and 2007, including as an assistant professor at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, an assistant professor at the University of Hawaii in Manoa and the University of Missouri in Columbia and an adjunct professor at the University of Oregon in Eugene between the years of 1985 and 2007.
In 1987, Dr. Cavanaugh edited "The Modernist Aesthetic in Polish Art." She authored an exhibition catalog soon thereafter, titled "Selections from the Reed College Art Collection," in 1989. Additionally, in 2000 Dr. Cavanaugh penned "Out Looking In: Early Modern Polish Art, 1890-1918," the first comprehensive study of the topic in English and an important stimulus for rethinking European modernism.
Dr. Cavanaugh initially pursued an education at the University of California Berkeley, obtaining a Bachelor of Art in English literature in 1967 and a Master of Art in art in 1972. She later earned a Doctor of Philosophy in art history at the University of Texas at Austin in 1989. Dr. Cavanaugh concluded her studies with a Master of Art Conservation at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada, in 2000.
Dr. Cavanaugh's career has been greatly supported through memberships with several prominent professional organizations, including the College Art Association of America, the Society of Historians of Eastern European, Eurasian, and Russian Art and Architecture, the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, and the Western Association for Art Conservation. She has also secured numerous grants throughout her professional ventures, such as a Fulbright grant while in college to study the arts in Poland at the University of Warsaw as part of an exchange program. While studying abroad, Dr. Cavanaugh became deeply inspired by her advisor, Professor Andrzej Jakimowicz, who took her under his wing. During this time, Dr. Cavanaugh became aware of the quality of work that she witnessed while at the National Museum.
This experience led her to visit other East European countries and to develop art history courses on the sources of 20th-century abstraction in Russian, East and West European art. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Cavanaugh has been cited in the 27th edition of Who's Who in the West.
