NEW YORK, NY, December 23, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Brian R. Lessing with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Lessing celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Amassing 36 years of industry experience, Mr. Lessing is a senior director and actuary for Equitable Financial Life Insurance Company in New York City. Responsible for various aspects of the business, from reviewing contracts to preparing actuarial materials for state filings, he has been employed by the organization since 1984. Developing a consistent reputation for excellence throughout the course of his career, Mr. Lessing began as an actuarial assistant and advanced to the position of vice president in 1998, a role he held for nearly 15 years before being appointed to his current position. Previously, he had gained expertise with Mutual of New York where he worked as a technical assistant and actuarial assistant.
As an extension of his commitments at the office, Mr. Lessing has enjoyed teaching for many years, beginning as an adjunct instructor at New York Institute of Technology in 1979. He later taught at Pace University and the College of Insurance, and presently teaches as an adjunct professor in the finance and risk engineering department on behalf of New York University's Tandon School of Engineering. An expert in developing life insurance products that help individuals manage risk and uncertainty, Mr. Lessing has also been engaged with many industry committees working on emerging insurance-related issues.
Mr. Lessing first studied at Princeton University, where he acquired an AB in mathematics, magna cum laude, in 1976. He subsequently attained an MS in mathematics at New York University's Courant Institute in 1979. Mr. Lessing received a Chartered Life Underwriter designation through American College in 1992. These endeavors gave him an opportunity to combine his interest in mathematics, his speaking and writing abilities, and his love of learning to do something he felt was valuable and significant.
Mr. Lessing was named a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in 1989. He is also a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, the Society of Financial Service Professionals, and Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Lessing received an AXA Innovation Award in 2009 and 2011 and was a finalist for an AXA Innovation Award in 2013.
Inspired by great scientists, mathematicians, actuaries and philosophers, he is most proud of being able to use his technical, speaking and writing skills to work in the insurance industry. Words of encouragement he would offer to those entering the field would be that "while it can be a challenging field, don't give up if you are enjoying the work, if you aspire to the career, and if you feel you have something to contribute. There is great value in diversity, and there are many important roles one can take."
To him, success means living as productive and meaningful a life as one's natural abilities and opportunities will allow. When asked what advice he would offer his 18-year-old self, he said, "Calm down, and enjoy each day." He hopes his legacy will be that his colleagues and students feel that they have benefitted from knowing and working with him, and that his contributions have helped them lead more meaningful and successful lives.
Looking ahead, in addition to his work as an actuary, he would like to spend more time with friends and family, do more traveling, and continue teaching mathematics and actuarial science.
