ITHACA, NY, December 23, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mary Gilliland has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. From a young age, Ms. Gilliland's interest in language and writing grounded and nourished her original poetry. She obtained a Master of Arts from Cornell University. Ms. Gilliland's extensive teaching experience includes The Chautauqua Institute and Weill Cornell Medicine Qatar but has been primarily as faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell.
In 1982, Ms. Gilliland's book "Gathering Fire" was published by Ithaca House. Throughout her writing career, her poems have been anthologized in such publications as "Nuclear Impact: Broken Atoms In Our Hands" from Shabda Press, "Like Light" from Bright Hill Press and "The &NOW Awards: The Best Innovative Writing" from Northwestern University Press. Most recently, Mary Gilliland authored a national competition award-winner, the poetry collection "The Ruined Walled Castle Garden" published by Bright Hill Press.
As a respected voice in her field, Ms. Gilliland has been featured in a number of journals, including AGNI, Hotel Amerika, Notre Dame Review, Passages North, Poetry, Poetry Ireland Review, Seneca Review, Smartish Pace, Southern California Anthology, Spoon River Poetry Review, Stand, TAB: The Journal of Poetry & Poetics, Tampa Review, Vallum and Yellow Silk. She has accepted many awards for individual poems and been recognized as a winner or a finalist in several national contests, including the National Poetry Series, the Bright Hill Press Poetry Chapbook Competition, the Ann Stanford Poetry Prize and the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry. Ms. Gilliland was also presented with a BBC Wildlife Magazine Poet of the Year Award for Nature Poetry and the Judith Siegel Pearson Award for Poetry. Additionally, she is an experienced multimedia collaborator with visual and performance artists.
Previously, Ms. Gilliland received the Stanley Kunitz Fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown as well as a Cornell University Council for the Arts Faculty Grant. She was a featured poet at the Al Jazeera International Film Festival. As a dedicated member of her community, she has served on the boards of Light on the Hill Retreat Center, the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, the Durland Alternatives Library, and Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies. She has maintained her professional association with the Academy of American Poets and the Poetry Society of America. Throughout her career, she has attributed her professional success to fellow poets with whom she has exchanged critiques and ideas, and to the freedom to create granted her by prestigious writing residencies that she has been awarded.
