Ms. Carroll is the owner and program director for MAMBEC Martial Arts, a martial arts, life skills and after-school leadership program designed to help youth develop confidence and positive conflict resolution skills. She began her own martial arts practice in 1997 and quickly fell in love with the balance of physical strength and mental discipline that it taught her. The inspiration for MAMBEC Martial Arts came in the early 2000s when Ms. Carroll found that her children had been struggling with the effects of bullying and social isolation at school.
Reminded of her own martial arts journey and the personal growth that it had encouraged, Ms. Carroll set out to create a program that would give children the same skills: the confidence that comes from discipline and physical strength, and the resources to communicate and develop nonviolent conflict resolution skills. Opened in 2003, MAMBEC Martial Arts is a contemporary martial arts center that focuses on teaching foundational body mechanics applicable to several martial arts disciplines alongside a comprehensive anti-bullying and critical thinking curriculum. Ms. Carroll is proud to have designed a program that allows youth the opportunity to grow without the focus on competition, belt advancement and sparring that traditional gyms often over-emphasize.
Ms. Carroll has expanded MAMBEC Martial Arts' offerings from her core program to include after-school and camps for the full summer, march break and in-service school day. Currently, Ms. Carroll is writing a series of books with illustrator Gary Boudreau to better illustrate and support the MAMBEC Martial Arts philosophy and curriculum. She attributes her success to hard work and commitment. Ms. Carroll has no plans to retire; she looks forward to the continued growth of her school and hopes to expand her after-school program offerings in the coming years.
