Mr. Powers joined Melick & Porter LLP as an associate upon graduation from law school. It has been his professional home for more than 36 years. He was elected partner in 1989, and became the firm's youngest Managing Partner in 1997. He specializes in professional liability, appellate and employment litigation, and insurance coverage. Throughout the course of his career, he has tried jury cases in state and federal courts, and appeared before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Mr. Powers participated in such notable cases as Carr v. Howard, which addressed the scope of medical peer review privileges in malpractice litigation and Hipsaver v. Kiel, which protected medical professionals and scientists against claims of commercial disparagements based upon their research.
Before embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Powers earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Boston College, where he graduated, with magna cum laude honors, in 1981. He subsequentlyreceived a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Catholic University of America's Columbus School of Law in 1984. Mr. Powers is involved with the Boston and Massachusetts Bar Associations, as well as the Defense Research Institute. He has served as a Trustee of the Cantata Singers as well as Montserrat College of Art.
Mr. Powers has been the recipient of numerous accolades, earning consistent AV-ratings through Martindale-Hubbell, inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America in insurance law and a decade of recognitions as a New England Super Lawyer and Massachusetts Super Lawyer.
