Driven to pursue a career in the medical field, Dr. Markey joined the military at a young age. After receiving a scholarship, he studied at the U.S. Military Academy for four years before earning a Doctor of Medicine at the Indiana University Medical School in 1974. From there, he completed an internship and residency through the Brooke Army Medical Center, becoming board certified in orthopedic surgery.
Upon completing his residency, Dr. Markey worked as a physician at United States Military Academy at West Point for four years and gained valuable expertise as a sports medicine physician with the Brooke Army Medical Center. Over the years, he studied athletic medicine through the International Olympic Committee and has excelled in private practice. Backed by his considerable expertise, he excels today as chief of the orthopedic surgery section of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, where he began in 2011. For more than 35 years, he served in the United States Army, earning the rank of colonel and several awards for his services, including a Combat Medal and two Bronze Stars.
Outside of his work, Dr. Markey has devoted himself to his community through lacrosse officiating and coaching Texas' youth and as a volunteer with the San Antonio Live Stock Exposition. Although his career has been filled with highlights, he is especially proud of authoring "Brachial Plexopathy in Football" in 1983, serving as an elder at his church, raising a beautiful family and working as a physician around the world. Looking ahead, Dr. Markey intends to continue training dogs and horses for field trial competitions in his spare time.
