An accomplished listee, Ms. Alford celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Passionate about art throughout her life and having graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College with a major in Studio Art, Ms. Alford began her career at Clay County High School in Green Cove Springs, Florida, in 1965. Transitioning towards academia, she received an appointment as Instructor and then as Assistant Profes-sor of art at the University of Mississippi. She was accepted into the Fulbright-Hays Teacher Exchange program to become a Lecturer at the Elizabeth Gaskell College, Manchester, England, 1972-73. In 1975, Ms. Alford be-gan two decades of teaching in the Department of Fine Arts at Alcorn State University, a public, historically black, land-grant University in Lorman, Mississippi.
In addition to a full-time commitment to teaching, Ms. Alford taught crafts and served on the senior staff at Camp Monterey, a residential camp for girls in Monterey, Tennessee. Spending over a decade in that role be-tween 1984 and 1995, she later served as the camp director.
Involved locally in the town of Port Gibson, Mississippi, Ms. Alford directed a summer art program for children for Mississippi Cultural Crossroads. She was on the board of Port Gibson Main Street, chairperson of the Port Gibson Preservation Commission, vice president of the Claiborne County Preservation Commission and hostess for the Countryside Institute visit to Port Gibson in 1996. Involved in annual festivals where she invited Missis-sippi crafts people to display their wares, Ms. Alford also initiated and served as curator for the 2002 exhibit, "Port Gibson Bicentennial Invitational Art Exhibit," sponsored by the Mississippi Arts Commission. For the ex-hibit, she invited ten Mississippi artists to produce works that gave their interpretation of the town in celebration of its 200th birthday.
Ms. Alford's years of exhibiting her paintings in teaching institutions, galleries and libraries throughout the state include many group shows with the Mississippi Art Colony, a one-woman show at the Northeast Louisiana Uni-versity Gallery in Monroe and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Gallery in Gautier, Mississippi. She was one of eight major Mississippi artists to study and interpret the Tchoutacabouffa River in "The River Project," sponsored by the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum, Biloxi, MS, in 2002. In 2004, she and Karen Jacobs had a two-person exhibit "Contrasting Views" at the Meridian Museum of Art, Meridian, Mississippi. Answering a call to Mississippi Artists, Ms. Alford submitted three watercolors which were included in a virtual exhibit, "Seeing 20/20," sponsored by the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, Laurel, MS.
