A celebrated geologist employed with the U.S. Department of Interior in Milwaukee for nearly 40 years, Mr. Lachance retired in 2014. Spending the first year of his career in Metairie, Louisiana, he later worked in Washington before being transferred to Milwaukee in 1983. In retirement, Mr. Lachance has worked part-time as a substitute teacher for grades K-12 for the Milwaukee Public School System.
During an earlier stage of his career, Mr. Lachance was involved in projects related to the Atlantic continental shelf. He later concentrated his efforts on the eastern portion of the U.S., where he and his wife, also a geologist, were responsible for discovering and proving that Michigan was not lined with faults. This seemed to be the case previously because the state had numerous deep wells. After having children, Mr. Lachance and his wife both decided to begin working part-time so they could share responsibilities at home. He returned to full-time work when he neared the age of 60.
A talented fiction writer, Mr. Lachance published his first short stories in "The Plaza," "Pleiades" and "Art Forum" in 1994. Locally, he has also been involved in community theater as an actor, and playwright, for years, and very much enjoys the arts. Among other works, he derived a screenplay from his first produced stage play titled "Faces in the Raft" in 1999, and the screenplay has been represented to the Chinese film industry by Anton Diether; a screen writer probably best known for his film version of "Moby Dick."
Mr. Lachance's latest stage play, "An End to War, An End to Peace" is based upon a personal insight he had regarding Homer's "The Odyssey," after he returned home from the Gulf War; "The Odyssey" is actually a poetic (allegorical) depiction of what life was like after Odysseus returned home from the Trojan War. Every Combat Veteran and Veteran family member he has discussed this insight with has wholeheartedly agreed with him, and a psychologist who was advising Mr. Lachance read the play and told him that the play depicts the path that all those who experience trauma follow, and strongly encouraged him to "get it out there." "An End To War An End To Peace" is suitable for a high school audience but, ironically, though he has had several stage plays produced by community theaters in Wisconsin, all of the community theater directors that he has approached about directing the play have told him it needs to be done by a professional theater group "because it is too deep" for community theater actors; primarily because of the short time they have for rehearsals. Mr. Lachance lacks firsthand knowledge about how to go about approaching professional theater groups, but he is determined to keep going no matter how long it takes to find a theater group that will take on his latest play, primarily because he feels that producing the play could help many Veterans and non-Veterans heal their wounds, and finally return home.
Fascinated with geology since he was very young, Mr. Lachance first discovered paleontology and, over time, his curiosity continued to evolve. After graduating from high school, he prepared for his career by receiving a Bachelor of Arts at the University of New Hampshire in 1973. He was subsequently commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserves as a second lieutenant, and later served as a major in the Gulf War from 1990 to 1991. Mr. Lachance also completed a Master of Science at Eastern Washington University in 1978 and since became a certified petroleum geologist through the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
