Now retired from the University of Louisville since 2011, Dr. Martínez-Maldonado enjoyed the last four years of his career as the executive vice president for research and as a professor of medicine, pharmacology and toxicology. A faculty member at several other institutions throughout his tenure in academia, he is renowned for his expertise and research in kidney physiology and pathophysiology, the treatment of clinical disturbances of blood composition, the clinical use of diuretics and the mechanisms of the development of hypertension. Dr. Martínez-Maldonado notably worked for more than 15 years as the chief of medical services and as the director of the Renal Metabolic Laboratory at the San Juan VA Hospital between 1973 and 1990, after which he excelled for eight years as the chief of medical services and clinical affairs at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, and vice-chair of the department of medicine of Emory University Medical School.

Among his other noteworthy roles in academia, Dr. Martínez-Maldonado was professor of medicine and physiology [chair of the department (1974-80)] at University of Puerto Rico (1973-1990). He served as the vice president of research and a professor of medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland (1998-2000), and as the president, dean and professor of medicine and physiology at the Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, Puerto Rico (2000-05). He also held various faculty appointments at Emory University in Atlanta, Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Likewise, Dr. Martínez-Maldonado has worked closely with the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, where he served on the board of science counselors and the science advisor committee. He held a similar role in National Institute of Arthritis Metabolism Digestive and Kidney Diseases. (Additionally, he was active as a national member of the general medicine, B study section of metabolism, kidney and digestive diseases.

A prolific and talented writer, Dr. Martínez-Maldonado has published several poetry books, including "La Voz Sostenida" in 1984, "Novela de Mediodia" in 2003, "Breve es el amor", 2019 and novels, including "Isla Verde (the Blue Chevy)", 1988, "El Imperialista ausente" (National Award of the Puerto Rico Institute of Culture) in 2014, "El Descubrimiento" in 2019. He is working to complete his 10th novel and have his sixth through ninth novels published soon. He has also contributed over 200 articles to various scholarly journals, served in editorial roles for several publications, including Editor in Chief of the American Journal of Medical Sciences, and was active on the editorial board of the University of Puerto Rico Press. Further, Dr. Martínez-Maldonado was a film critic for "El Reportero" from 1983 until 1986 and "El Mundo" between 1987 and 1990; he is now the film critic for 80Grados.net

Combining his passion for medicine with his interest in the community at large, Dr. Martínez-Maldonado was active with Puerto Rico's health committee and popular democrat committee during the mid-1980s. He was later elected as the president of the board of trustees at the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and Performing Arts Center from 2001 to 2005 and served as the chairperson of the Culture and Recreation Panel in Puerto Rico during 2015. Dr. Martínez-Maldonado also provided his expertise to the Alliance for Puerto Rico Inc. as a board secretary and board director, to the Institute of Puerto Rican Literature as trustee and to the Dialogue for Puerto Rico as member of the executive committee.

Well respected in his field, Dr. Martínez-Maldonado is a master member of the American College of Physicians. He is also an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Heart Association and the Council for High Blood Pressure Research. Among other professional affiliations, Dr. Martínez-Maldonado served in various capacities for the American Society of Nephrology, is a past president of the Latin America Society of Nephrology and is a former president and secretary-treasurer of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Born in Yauco, Puerto Rico, Dr. Martínez-Maldonado received a Bachelor of Science at the University of Puerto Rico in 1957, after which he traveled to the U.S., where he attained a Doctor of Medicine at Temple University in 1961. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship at Saint Charles Hospital in Toledo, Ohio, and a residency at the VA Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he served as the chief resident. Additionally, Dr. Martínez-Maldonado had the opportunity to train at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

Dr. Martínez-Maldonado was the recipient of a National Novel Award in Puerto Rico in 2013. He was also named as Distinguished Scientist in Puerto Rico with the Agustin Stahl Award from the City of San Juan in 2017. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Martínez-Maldonado has been showcased in the 45th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the first through eighth editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, the 24th through 32nd editions of Who's Who in the World, and 18 editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest between 1995 and 2016.
