For more than 47 years, Mr. Winchell has practiced patent law throughout Ohio, Tennessee, Maryland and New Mexico. More recently, he began serving as the president and chief executive officer of Win Partners, LLC, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2016. Since founding Win Partners over four years ago, Mr. Winchell's investment efforts have led to a very profitable fund in excess of $1 million.
Earning a tremendous reputation for his success practicing intellectual property, government contracts and technology business law over the years, Mr. Winchell began by working for Hamilton, Renner & Kenner (now known as Renner Kenner), a patent firm in Akron, Ohio, then for Diamond Shamrock Corporation, a chemical company in Painesville, Ohio, and Lamson and Sessions Company, a fastener manufacturer in Cleveland. In 1982, he obtained a position with Martin Marietta Corporation in Cleveland. Over the next 12 years, he had the opportunity to serve as general patent counsel for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc., in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Additionally, Mr. Winchell enjoyed a 22-year tenure as the director and senior attorney for Sandia National Laboratories, a U.S. DOE laboratory managed by Sandia Corporation in Albuquerque, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation. Among his responsibilities, he handled intellectual property matters, government contracts and one billion dollars in procurement subcontract activities.
As an extension of his career, Mr. Winchell taught business law, government contracts law, intellectual property law and e-business law at several area law schools and for various MBA programs. He also taught courses in intellectual property for the American Chemical Society, Technology Ventures Corporation and the U.S. DOE National Laboratories, as well as courses on world markets legal issues for international marketing classes at the University of New Mexico. Furthermore, Mr. Winchell notably taught nearly 1,000 inventors how to write and file U.S. patent applications between 2006 and 2016. Of those inventors, 825 U.S. utility patents were awarded.
Serving his community through involvement with several civic organizations early on in his career, Mr. Winchell was initially a member of the Leroy Township Zoning Commission in Painesville, Ohio, between 1977 and 1978. He then served as a trustee and chairman of the Leroy Township Board of Trustees from 1978 to 1981 and as chairman of the Leroy Township Board of Zoning Appeals from 1981 to 1984.
An alumnus of the University of Akron, Mr. Winchell received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and Bachelor of Arts in speech in 1970 and a law degree in 1974. He has been admitted to practice law by the Ohio and Tennessee Bar Associations, the U.S. and Canadian Patent Offices, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth and Federal Circuits. Mr. Winchell is a registered patent attorney in the United States, a registered patent agent in Canada, and is a certified licensing professional through the Licensing Executives Society.
Mr. Winchell is a member of several industry-related organizations, including the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Licensing Executives Society International, Inc., of Canada and the U.S., and the American Chemical Society. In 2011, Mr. Winchell was named Best of the Bar in New Mexico.
