Aligned with the U.S. Postal Service for more than 30 years, Mr. Brockert recently retired in 2018 as a public relations specialist. Joining the independent government agency in 1984 as a program manager and stamp program specialist, he earned numerous other exciting roles, such as an art director and designer of U.S. stamps and stationery between 1986 and 1997, the curator of special collections from 2003 to 2006 and a program manager of stamp manufacturing from 2008 until 2016. Mr. Brockert formerly worked for Linn's Stamp News in Sidney, Ohio. Hired in 1976 shortly after receiving his degree, he advanced to the position of a senior editor, and presently excels as a freelance writer and consultant.
As an extension of his career, Mr. Brockert was an affiliated staff member at the Smithsonian Institute from 2012 to 2013 and a guest curator at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum between 2005 and 2006. He also maintained involvement as an occasional guest lecturer at Pennsylvania State University and the American Philatelic Society for an annual summer seminar on philately from 1990 until 2015. Philately is notably the study of postage stamps and postal history. Additionally, Mr. Brockert found success as an agency representative for the commission of the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution between 1986 and 1991.
Published in various capacities, Mr. Brockert authored his first book, "Basic Knowledge for the Stamp Collector" in 1978. Receiving much acclaim, the book received a Silver Medal from the American Philatelic Society in 1979 and an International Bronze Medal in 1986. He later co-authored "Stamp Collecting Made Easy" with Elaine Durnin Boughner in 1984, and edited the 20th through 22nd editions of "The Postal Service Guide to U.S. Stamps" from 1993 until 1995, "Stamps etc." between 1993 and 1996 and "USA Philatelic" from 1996 until 1998. More recently, Mr. Brockert wrote and composed "Mass of the Good Shepherd" in 2000, which he has since updated and revised so that it can continue to be utilized in churches throughout the country. He has contributed numerous articles in professional and hobby journals over the years as well.
A deeply committed civic advocate, Mr. Brockert was involved in various community efforts throughout Virginia during much of the 1980s and into the early 1990s. He served as the chairperson of publicity and the president of the Gunston Elementary School Parent Teacher Association, was the president of the Newington Forest Elementary Parent Teacher Association and was active as the budget chairperson and secretary for the Fairfax County Council Parent Teacher Association. Likewise, Mr. Brockert coached for Lorton Little League.
Mr. Brockert was born in Tipp City, Ohio. He later attended Ohio University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in journalism, with honors, in 1975. In supporting his career, Mr. Brockert is a professional member of the American Philatelic Society, as well as the American Association of Retired Persons.
