Celebrated for more than a decade of excellence in clinical care and administrative leadership, Dr. Martin has garnered a laudable reputation as a board-certified family physician. Her earliest exposure to a career in medicine derived from her mother, an esteemed doctor in her own right, who inspired and supported her through her own educational process. A graduate of the College of William and Mary, Dr. Martin holds a Bachelor of Science in biology, graduating with honors.
In 2008, Dr. Martin was bestowed with a Doctorate of Medicine from New York Medical College, graduating with honors as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, after which she completed her residency training at Lancaster General Health. Afterwards, she would remain active at Lancaster General Health for an additional year as a hospitalist, departing to accept a prestigious fellowship and junior faculty position in Arts in Medicine at Georgetown University, where she would be named the Inpatient Teacher of the Year in 2013 in her teaching hospitalist role at Providence Hospital in Washington, DC.
From 2013 to 2015, Dr. Martin served as a voluntary family physician at the United Mission Hospital in Tansen, Nepal, where she and her team taught Nepali medical residents and provided full-spectrum care to a significant catchment of the population residing in Nepal's middle Annapurna Himalayan region. She acquired comfort with the Nepali language during this lime, and gained insight into best practices around the provision of global health in low-resource settings. In April 2015, she also served as part of remote medical relief efforts following the series of earthquakes that devastated the region, providing acute medical care and community assessments in the immediate wake of the crisis.
Since returning from Nepal, Dr. Martin has occupied her current core faculty role with the Northwell-Phelps Family Medicine Residency Program, where she cares for patients in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings, in addition to leading research and curricular initiatives as the principal investigator of a five-year K02 grant funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration. She is active as co-chairperson of the hospital's ethics committee, and contributes to her alma mater's undergraduate medical education through her role as Advisory Dean at New York Medical College. In recent years, her professional interests have expanded to include palliative care, and she hopes to complete her board certification process and encourage other physicians to specialize in the critically-underserved field.
Dr. Martin was nominated for a 2018 Doctors of Distinction Award, is a member of multiple professional societies and is a two-time winner of the Lancaster General Exceptional Teacher & Role Model Award. She credits much of her success to her Christian faith, her supportive family, friends and mentors, and the wide diversity of her experiences, which she considers foundational in allowing her to treat patients with compassion and excellence. As a part of her commitment to service, Dr. Martin serves as an expert consultant for the Fund for Global Health. Likewise, she lectures high school students on opportunities in healthcare, volunteers with her local community food pantry, and leads her church's missions committee. To remain aware of developments in the field, Dr. Martin maintains membership in a number of professional societies, including the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Society of Hospital Medicine, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity, and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
