After nearly 50 years as an engineer, researcher and educator, Professor Leissa retired as a professor emeritus at The Ohio State University in 2001. An alumnus of the university, he spent 35 years teaching on campus, climbing the ranks from instructor to assistant, associate and full professor of engineering mechanics. During his final two years on campus, he notably taught courses in mechanical engineering. Prior to joining the faculty at The Ohio State University, he spent a brief time in the field with Sperry Gyroscope Company in Great Neck, New York, from 1954 to 1955.
Apart from his classroom hours, Professor Leissa was active at professional symposiums over the years, both locally and abroad. He chaired the first through fifth International Symposium on Vibrations of Continuous Systems between 1997 and 2005, which were hosted in Colorado, Switzerland, Wyoming, England and Germany. He was also involved with multiple other conferences throughout the world, was a visiting professor at Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule in Zurich, the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado and the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, and was a devoted consultant for many years.
A prolific writer, Professor Leissa, who is renowned for his work with vibrations, authored several books. His first, titled "Vibration of Plates," was published in 1969 and became highly successful. Other books include "Vibration of Shells" in 1973 and "Buckling of Laminated Composite Plates and Shell Panels" in 1985. Professor Leissa also contributed his expertise in various editorial capacities, including as editor-in-chief of Applied Mechanics Reviews and on the editorial board of several renowned professional journals, such as the Journal of Vibration and Control, Composite Structures and the International Journal of Structural Stability. Furthermore, he has disseminated his research findings by authoring or co-authoring over 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
Early in his career, Professor Leissa spent his free time involved in the arts. From 1971 to 1979, he was notably a performer in 13 Columbus Symphony Orchestra Operas. Professor Leissa is also an alumnus of The Ohio State University. He received a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 1954, followed by a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in 1954 and 1958, respectively.
A respected fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Professor Leissa was honored by the organization in 2004 with an Applied Mechanics Award. Other professional memberships include the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the American Society for Engineering Education, as well as the American Academy of Mechanics, where he served as president from 1987 to 1988 and received a Distinguished Service Medal in 2001.
In 1977, Professor Leissa was the recipient of a Recognition Plaque from the Institute de Mecanica Applicada. He later received a Centennial Certificate from the American Society for Engineering Education in 1993 and a Thomas French Achievement Award from The Ohio State University in 2006. A celebrated Marquis listee, Professor Leissa has been showcased in over 30 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
Professor Leissa climbed mountains most of his life. He climbed the highest ones in Alaska (Mt. McKinley, 20,320 ft), Mexico (Orizaba, 18,701 ft), France (Mt. Blanc, 15,770 ft) and Switzerland (Mt. Rosa, 15,203 ft) as well as the Matterhorn (14,691 ft). In Colorado he climbed the 54 highest peaks, all above 14,000 ft.
