Dr. Taylor is a prominent physicist and educator who accumulated nearly 50 years of expertise. Originally active as a specialist for the Naval Aviation Ordnance Test Station between 1956 and 1959, while pursuing his bachelor's degree, he distinguished himself through his exemplary work on behalf of the guided missiles and radar department. Dr. Taylor was subsequently hired by Texaco Experiment Company as an associate physicist in 1960, investigating the growth and properties of single crystal boron. In 1967, he joined the Union Carbine Corporation's Linde division as a research physicist investigating magnetic and thermal properties of materials. Transitioning towards academia, he contributed throughout the next 40 years as a professor in the department of physics at James Madison University.
During the course of his tenure, Dr. Taylor notably served as the director of the James Madison University Center for Material Science between 1989 and 2004. The Center was established to provide an advanced undergraduate program in materials science and research that would lead students to academic and post-graduation success. Known for his passion and expertise in physics, Dr. Taylor made a considerable impact on his students and had an innate ability to help them meet and exceed their potential both in the classroom and research in physics and technology.
Dr. Taylor has been recognized by his peers as a Fellow of the American Association of Physics Teachers and of the Virginia Academy of Science. He is a life member of American Association of Physics Teachers, the American Physical Society and a respected member of the James Madison University Emeritus Association and Sigma Xi. As a scientist, Dr. Taylor has made numerous presentations and contributed many scholarly articles to various scientific journals.
A visionary leader behind various community and educational initiatives, Dr. Taylor has served on the Board of Directors of the Shenandoah Valley Habitat for Humanity and the allocations committee of the "Jeffries Memorial Trust and Gwathmey Memorial Trust," in Bank of America. He is presently aligned with several causes that seek to benefit children. Dr. Taylor serves as the treasurer, trustee, and board member of the Harrisonburg Kiwanis Foundation and is a 40 year "Legion of Honor" member of the Harrisonburg Kiwanis Club. He received a Kiwanis International President Award in 2007 and a Kiwanis International George F. Hixon Fellowship in 2013.
An alumnus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Dr. Taylor received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in physics in 1959 and 1961, respectively. Accepted to the University of Virginia, he subsequently attained a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1967. Celebrated for his expertise, Dr. Taylor has been honored with several awards, including the "Homer L. Dodge Citation for Distinguished Service to American Association of Physics Teachers" in 2000, the "Ivey F. Lewis Distinguished Service Award" and the J. Shelton Horsley Research Award from the Virginia Academy of Science.
In 2017, Dr. Taylor was granted an Endowed Annual Awarded Named in his honor, "The VAS/Gerald R. Taylor Jr. Scholarship Award," given to a junior physics major annually in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at James Madison University. He enjoys model railroading, digital photography, shooting and walking hobbies.
