Dr. Throne has enjoyed a long and successful career in plastics engineering that has spanned more than 55 years. Presently, he is the owner of Sherwood Technologies in the Tampa Bay area of Dunedin, Florida, a consultancy business that specializes in plastics process engineering. In addition to providing his consultation expertise, he has also taught technical seminars to professionals worldwide. Dr. Throne's service in the field has included research and development positions with Amoco Chemicals Corporation, Beloit Corporation, American Standard, B.F. Goodrich and E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company.
Viewing his career as a long race over various hurdles, Dr. Throne admits that his responsibilities have been quite challenging. However, his work also came with great rewards. Not only has Dr. Throne had the opportunity to travel to over 40 different countries during his tenure, he also has met and collaborated with some of the best in the industry.
As an extension of his career, Dr. Throne taught engineering courses at several institutions. In this capacity, he was a professor of polymer engineering at the University of Akron, a professor in the energetics department at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee and an associate professor of chemical engineering at Ohio University. As a successful engineer, Dr. Throne has 11 patents, including a basic patent in CPET thermoforming. He has also served as an international speaker and seminar leader in his field, having contributed over 100 refereed technical papers in various scientific publications and over a dozen technical books, including "Polymer Processing Principles" in 1994 and "Technology of Thermoforming" in 1996. The second edition of his technical book on thermoforming is still in print nearly 25 years later.
Dr. Throne studied at Case Institute of Technology, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1959 in the top 10% of his graduating class. At the University of Delaware, he completed a Master of Science in chemical engineering in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering in 1964. Dr. Throne was a registered professional engineer in Ohio and Illinois and a certified scientist in England.
An elected fellow of the Institute of Materials in England and the Plastics and Rubber Institute, Dr. Throne was also an elected fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers, a long time board member of the thermoforming division and an organizing member of the rotational molding division of the Society of Plastics Engineers. Throughout his career, he has also been active with numerous other professional organizations, including the Society of Plastics Engineers, where he has served on the board of directors of the Engineering Properties and Structure, Rotational Molding, and Thermoforming Divisions, and Milwaukee section. Furthermore, Dr. Throne was secretary of the Polymer Processing Society and a vice chairperson of the engineering affairs council of the American Association of Engineering Societies.
In support of his community, Dr. Throne has been involved with various local causes, such as the Dunedin Volunteer Emergency Response Team as its head coordinator between 2008 and 2010 and the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a CERT certified trainer. He was also a member of the Select Group of Council Advisors in Naperville, Illinois, a member of the community leadership workshop for the Naperville Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Jaycees of Milwaukee and East Brunswick, New Jersey. Dr. Throne received Lifetime Achievement Awards from three divisions of the Society of Plastics Engineers and the first international Lifetime Achievement Award in Thermoforming Technology. The Society's thermoforming division also named him as its Thermoformer of the Year in 2005.
He and his wife of 57 years raised two successful professional children, Michael William Throne, a city manager in California and Barbara Jean Throne, a lawyer in the Florida Panhandle. He has four grandchildren.
