Gaining extensive recognition in the classroom, Dr. Shin is a talented and inspiring educator who has excelled as a chair professor in the School of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at Handong Global University in Pohang, South Korea, since 2013. He is also a professor of emeritus in the Division of Computing at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology in Daejeon, South Korea, where he spent 25 years teaching various courses in the field. ICT in education is notably a method of education that includes information and communications technology to support and improve delivery and processing of information. Prior to his years in academia, Dr. Shin spent 10 years in the field, beginning in 1970 as a system analyst for LG Electronics and Joongang Mass Communication and then as a senior researcher with the Korea Institute of Electronics Technology from 1978 to 1980.
As a veteran researcher, Dr. Shin has spent a great deal of time conducting research, with interests including data-driven computer animation and geometric algorithms. He has disseminated many of his findings by authoring over 150 technical papers on the topics of computer graphics and computational geometry. He had been an editor for well-known academic journals in computer graphics and visualization, including Graphical Models (GMOD) and IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (IEEE TVCG).
Among his most notable achievements, Dr. Shin was fortunate to have been able to produce over 35 PhD students while teaching, some of whom have already surpassed him as researchers, which he is proud to hear. To better serve his academia and industry, he also founded the Pacific Graphics Conference as program co-chair in 1993, which has since become a premier graphics conference throughout the world.
Dr. Shin studied at Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea, achieving a Bachelor of Engineering in industrial engineering in 1970. He later achieved a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in industrial engineering at the University of Michigan in the United States in 1983 and 1986, respectively.
A recognized life member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology, Dr. Shin has also been involved with multiple other academic organizations in support of his career. He is a member, past vice president and honorary president of the Korea Computer Graphics Society, member and past president of the special interest group of theoretical computer science of the Korea Information Science Society, has been a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Celebrated for his success, Dr. Shin received the first Grand Computer Graphics Award from the Korean Computer Graphics Society in 2009 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Asia Graphics Association in 2019. He was also named Graduate Student of the Year from the University of Michigan in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering in 1985.
