Having enjoyed an accomplished career in higher education that began in 1972 at the University of Illinois, Dr. Adrian rose from an assistant professor to a full professorship and later became holder of the Leonard C. and Mary Lou Hoeft Endowed Chair of Engineering over the course of more than three decades. Presently, he is the Ira A. Fulton Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and a Regents' Professor at Arizona State University, where he continues to teach and conduct extensive research in his field. Dr. Adrian has also provided his expertise over the years as a visiting professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford University in Stanford, California, during 1982, a visiting research scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications in Urbana, Illinois, between 1989 and 1990 and a By Fellow of Churchill College in the University of Cambridge, UK in 1994. The over-arching theme of his career has been the development and application of advanced techniques, experimental, numerical and analytical, to better understand chaotic nature of turbulent flow and its space-time structure. Best known for his contributions to experimental fluid dynamics, especially the development of the particle image velocimeter, he was also one of the first developers of the laser Doppler velocimeter technique, which measures point-wise velocities. His research has spanned the flow of fluids on the very small scales of micro-fluidics to the very large scales of the atmospheric boundary layer.
In the course of his extensive research, Dr. Adrian has acquired eight patents and written extensively, having contributed over 200 articles in peer reviewed journals and numerous book chapters. He is the 2011 author of "Particle Image Velocimetry" and has edited approximately a dozen other books. Dr. Adrian also served as an associate editor for the Journal of Fluid Mechanics every year between 1996 and 2007 and, most notably, serves as the editor of eFluids.com, an online resource for fluid dynamics and flow engineering that includes books, tutorials, educational tools, calculators and more. Additionally, he has been a frequent speaker throughout his career, hosting numerous seminars and conferences, and has served as an invited and keynote speaker on multiple occasions.
Dr. Adrian studied at the University of Minnesota, attaining a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in mechanical engineering in 1967 and 1969, respectively. He subsequently studied abroad at the University of Cambridge in England, where he competed a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1972.
The impact his research has had on diverse fields of engineering has been recognized widely. Dr. Adrian has been named as a fellow and honorary member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). In 2002, the AIAA recognized him with an Aerospace Measurement Technology Award for his contributions to the development of the particle velocimeter and again in 2007 with the Fluid Dynamics Award. He is also a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, from whom he received the Fluid Engineering Award in 2001 for his research in fluid mechanics, the American Physical Society, which presented him with the Fluid Dynamics Prize in 2005, the American Academy of Mechanics and the World Innovation Foundation. Among his many recognitions, he received two Colwell Merit Awards from the Society of Automotive Engineers in 1990 and 1991, two Best Paper Awards from the Institute of Physics in 1995 and 2017 and the Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota in 2015. The importance of Dr. Adrian's research has been recognized internationally by the Asanuma Award from the International Society of Flow Visualization, 2002, the Journal of Visualization Award, 2007, the Leonardo Da Vinci Award 2010 and the Nusselt-Reynolds Prize from the Assembly of World Conferences on Experimental Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, 2001. He was elected to the United States National Academy of Engineering in 1996 and listed by the Institute for Scientific Information's Web of Science as one of the 250 Most Highly Cited Researchers in Engineering in 2005.
Dr. Adrian's millions of dollars in research have been supported by such organizations as the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Office of Naval Research, the Department of Energy, a scholarship from the Winston Churchill Foundation in 1994, a Miegunyah Distinguished Fellowship in 2009 and a Tewksbury Fellowship from the University of Melbourne in 2010.
