Celebrating nearly 40 years as a general practice dentist before retiring in 2007, Dr. Lawton was noted as a respected professional and member of his hometown community in Hancock. Soon after high school, he had to decide between medical and dental school, eventually deciding to pursue the latter. After completing his requirements at the University of Wisconsin, Madison campus, to enter dental school, he enrolled at Indiana University, graduating with a Doctor of Dental Science in 1969. That same year, Dr. Lawton founded his private practice in Hancock, Michigan.
Apart from his full-time professional responsibilities, Dr, Lawton has been involved with a number of public and charitable activities, Most notably, he served as the secretary-treasurer of the U.S, Coast Guard Auxiliary from 1975 to 1986, Dr. Lawton then became the flotilla commander with the aforementioned auxiliary from 1986 to 1987, a position that requires leadership and supervision to ensure that the program conforms to policies and procedures.
Affiliated with multiple professional organizations in support of his career, Dr. Lawton has been a member of the American Dental Association (Life Member), the American Society of Dentistry for Children, the Michigan Dental Association (Life Member), and the Copper County District Dental Association (Life Member). He was also appointed as a lifetime member of the Isle Royale Natural History Association, and the Indiana Alumni Association, Recruited to the board of directors of the Quincy Mine Hoist Association, he was additionally a member of the Historical Societies of Houghton and Keweenaw Counties, the Boat Owners Association of the U.S., the Isle Royale Boaters Association and the Hancock chapter of Rotary International. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Lawton has been recognized in the second edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America and the 2st edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.
