OAK PARK, CA, February 01, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Floyd Edward Toole, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Toole celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
After more than 40 years in the field, Dr. Toole retired as the vice president of acoustical engineering for Harman International Industries Inc. in Northridge, California. Accepting his position in 1991, he previously flourished as a research scientist with the National Research Council of Canada for more than 25 years. An expert in the acoustics and psychoacoustics of sound reproduction, Dr. Toole devoted his work to developing methods for subjective and objective evaluations of loudspeakers, and how their sound propagates through rooms, the goal being to allow people to hear the recorded art as it was created. The research led to guidance about loudspeaker measurements, and how to design and calibrate sound reproducing systems for venues range from casual home environments, through dedicated home theaters to cinemas. The core measurement method he created is now embodied in an audio industry standard.
Dr. Toole obtained his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, Canada in 1960. He was then awarded a Lord Beaverbrook Overseas Scholarship taking him to Imperial College in London, where he conducted research on sound localization, and properties of binaural hearing. A National Research Council of Canada scholarship allowed him to complete his PhD studies and led to a research position there. Dr. Toole focused his work on loudspeaker measurements, room acoustics and methods for double-blind listening tests aimed at revealing the psychoacoustic relationships between what was measured and what was heard.
The research was successful, leading to numerous peer-reviewed journal papers, other audio industry publications and invited lectures. Upon joining Harman International to apply audio science in an industrial setting, he set up a research group to continue the investigations. In 2017, Dr. Toole authored the third edition of "Sound Reproduction: The Acoustics and Psychoacoustics of Loudspeakers and Rooms." The book summarizes existing science, leading to measurement methods and design objectives for loudspeakers that achieve high double-blind subjective ratings of sound quality, and methods for integrating them into listening rooms for professional and domestic use.
A fellow and past president of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), Dr. Toole is also a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA). As a testament to his exceptional achievements, Dr. Toole was awarded both the silver and gold medals by the AES, a Lifetime Achievement Award from CEDIA and the Beryllium Lifetime Achievement Award from Audio and Loudspeaker Technologies International. He was also inducted to the Consumer Technology Association's Hall of Fame and received the Peter Barnett Award from the Institute of Acoustics in the U.K. Dr. Toole has been featured in the 24th through 26th editions of Who's Who in the West.
