Dr. Auciello is an entrepreneur who co-founded and developed three companies, namely: Advanced Diamond Technologies (2003; profitable in 2012, sold to big company in 2019); founder and chief executive officer of Original Biomedical Implants (OBI-USA / 2013-prsent), a Texas-based business, and OBI-México / 2016-prsent, a Hermosillo-México-based business, all specialized in marketing a revolutionary ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCDTM) coating, which is economical, bio-inert, hypoallergenic and biocompatible, and also extremely resistant to wear and corrosion and exhibiting the unique mechanical, physical, chemical properties of diamond gems, such that the UNCD coating can be tailored to various applications, namely: coating of mechanical pump seals and bearing (in the worldwide market), corrosion resistant electrodes for water purification systems; new generation of implantable and external medical devices, with the best biocompatibility coating exiting today. Dr. Auciello's business came on the heels of success in engineering and physics, as well as his tenure in national laboratories and academia.
Now a distinguished endowed chair professor at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), Dr. Auciello has taught undergraduate and graduate level students in materials science and bioengineering. He also held appointments at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México as a distinguished adjunct professor, Michigan State University, the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs and the University of Illinois as an adjunct professor, as well as North Carolina State University in Raleigh as an associate professor in the department of nuclear engineering. As an educator, Dr. Auciello has notably been responsible for directing and co-directing numerous doctorate theses as well. Additionally, he was influential as an invited lecturer and guest scientist before various professional organizations and institutions and has been active on several graduate student advisory committees.
Dr. Auciello's decades of success in applied science and technology has included appointments with the Institute of Aerospace Studies at the University of Toronto in Canada as a research associate and senior research associate between 1979 and 1984. He was also employed by the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina, a nonprofit organization based in the Research Triangle Park, as a senior research scientist between 1988 and 1996. Likewise, Dr. Auciello earned distinction as a senior and Fellow (highest honor) scientist at the Argonne National Laboratory between 1996 and 2010.
As a seasoned scientist, Dr. Auciello has secured more than 25 patents with two additional patents pending. He has been responsible for the development of ferroelectric thin film technology for ferroelectric memories, the development of coatings for field emission flat panel displays and the development of unique, in-situ, real-time characterization techniques to study film growth processes. During his career, Dr. Auciello has helped organize, chair and lecture at multiple national and international conferences. A prolific writer, he has also contributed several book chapters, as well as over 20 books as editor, two of which include a series on thin films and applications to devices that were published through Academic Press. Furthermore, he has contributed approximately 500 peer-reviewed articles and has served as an associate editor for such journals as Applied Physics Letters and Integrated Ferroelectrics.
Born in Cordoba, Argentina, Dr. Auciello did his secondary school education, between 1959 and 1963, in the Liceo Military "General Paz", similar to military academies in the USA, and he graduated as a bachelor and lieutenant in the Argentinian Army in 1963. He later enrolled in college, studying electronic engineering at the University of Cordoba until 1970. Dr. Auciello subsequently received a Master of Science (1973) and a Doctor of Philosophy (1976) in physics at the Institute "Balseiro" (a top world class science Institute) in the National University of Cuyo in Argentina, funded by the Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica in Argentina.
A member of several prominent professional organizations throughout his career, Dr. Auciello is active with the Planetary Society and Sigma Xi and was recently named as a senior member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2019. Additionally, he is a member and Bunshah Award recipient of the American Vacuum Society and an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Materials Research Society (MRS). Dr, Auciello was member of the Governance of the MRS and President in 2013, elected by the worldwide members of the MRS. Dr. Auciello's achievements have earned him seven Research and Development 100 Awards and several Outstanding Inventor Recognition Awards from the U.S. Department of Energy. He was also recognized with an Innostar USA-China Competition Award, a Hispanic Engineering National Achievement Award, a Federation of National Laboratories Award and a University of Chicago Distinguished Performance Award, and in 2021 received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who.
