For more than 35 years, Dr. Claridge has been affiliated with Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, initially accepting a post as an associate professor of mechanical engineering in 1986. Advancing to become a professor in 1995, he was also appointed by the aforementioned university as a senior fellow at the Texas Engineering Experiment Station in 1999 and the director of the Energy Systems Laboratory in 2007. An accomplished professor at Texas A&M University, Dr. Claridge additionally served as the Dresser Industries professor in the Dwight Look College of Engineering and as the Leland Jordan professor of mechanical engineering during his impressive tenure on campus.
Dr. Claridge began his teaching career in 1982 as an associate professor of civil and architectural engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He previously worked as a research group manager at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) in Golden, Colorado between 1980 and 1982, which is now known as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Additionally, Dr. Claridge formerly found success as a science fellow, staff member and project director with the U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C. from 1976 to 1980.
As a prominent figure in his field, Dr. Claridge has been active as a consultant for various organizations since 1980. He further flourished as the director of the Symposium of Improving of Building Efficiency in Hot and Humid Climates in Texas from 1988 to 1992 as well as a visiting Erskine fellow at Canterbury University in New Zealand during 2000. Having conducted extensive research as an engineer, he has received multiple patents and established himself as a prolific author, having contributed his wealth of knowledge to articles published in numerous scholarly journals in addition to co-authoring three books. Dr. Claridge had also maintained his involvement as the deputy editor for the International Journal of Energy Research between 1988 and 1997.
Beyond his primary work in the field, Dr. Claridge was recruited to the board of directors of the Brazos Valley Emmaus Community and the Southwest Partnership for Energy Efficiency as a Resource. He also participated on the board of his local homeowners' association and as the president of the college of fellows of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). Dr. Claridge was also selected as a congressional science fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and an honorary international member of the Society of Heating, Air-Conditioning, and Sanitary Engineers of Japan.
A native of Walla Walla, Washington, Dr. Claridge initially earned a Bachelor of Science in engineering physics, cum laude, at Walla Walla University in 1964. He continued his studies at Stanford University in Stanford, California, from which he obtained a Master of Science in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1976. Dr. Claridge has been certified as a professional mechanical engineer in the state of Texas since 1991.
Associated with several prominent professional organizations, Dr. Claridge was the committee chairman of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a member the American Solar Energy Society and a member of ASHRAE, for which he had formerly thrived in various roles and on several committees. In addition to receiving numerous research grants, he was honored with a Service Award from the department of civil, environmental, and architectural engineering at the University of Colorado in 1985, an Appreciation Award from ASHRAE in 1985 and an E.K. Campbell Award of Merit for Outstanding Service and Achievement in Teaching from the ASHRAE in 1998. Having accepted three Best Paper Awards for his contributions to scholarly journals, Dr. Claridge has been notably featured in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
