GOWRIE, IA, February 08, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present George A. Anderson with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Anderson celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Following eight years of enlisted and commissioned service in the U.S. Navy, and more than two decades in the diplomatic profession as a Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., and abroad, Mr. Anderson retired in 1980. He subsequently served as vice president, United Technologies Corporation (Europe) at Brussels for three years, after which he served as president, Widcom International, 1974-1977, for whom he marketed the world's first videophones in Europe and the Middle East. Ultimately, Mr Anderson served as a performance auditor in the Arizona Legislature's Auditor General's Office, 1988-1993, from which he retired in 1993.
Accumulating more than 35 years of experience throughout his career in federal and state government and in international business, Mr. Anderson was particularly honored to have written, then edited, the State Department's contribution to President Eisenhower's Top Secret Daily Brief in 1960 before he assumed responsibility for European and Soviet Affairs in the Secretariat of Secretary of State Rusk, 1961-1962. He was most gratified otherwise to have promoted, as a labor attache, international understanding among U.S. and European trade union and employer organizations regarding our countries' common economic, political and defense interests.
Capitalizing on his eight years prior service in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Anderson served as political-military affairs officer at the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam, 1967-1969. During his time in Vietnam, Mr. Anderson, along with his friend and colleague David Carpenter, completed a comprehensive study of the "Uses of Herbicides in Warfare." in accordance with which he reduced that controversial program by two-thirds. From Vietnam, at the Defense Department's request, Mr. Anderson joined the Vietnam Task Force at the Pentagon, 1968-1869, for which service he received the Secretary of Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Medal, the highest award for civilian service in the Defense Department.
At United Technologies Corporation (Europe), Mr Anderson promoted cooperation among that American company's many newly acquired manufacturing facilities in Europe as well as joint ventures with European companies in fast growing aeronautical, electronic and other high technology fields where it was imperative to have a domestic partner. In addition to those responsibilities, Mr. Anderson was a member of the Government Relations Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Belgium, where he founded and chaired its sub-committee on government directed industrial policy, then a hotly debated proposal in the European Community that was subsequently discarded. The American Chamber of Commerce in Belgium is now one of the most highly regarded business promotion organizations in the EU.
Mr. Anderson obtained a Bachelor of Arts (with Distinction) at Missouri University in 1952, where he majored in European diplomatic history and naval science. He also received a certificate in political economics as a Fulbright student at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1953, and a Master of Science at the University of Southern California in 1973. He also undertook a year of post-graduate study in labor economics at American University in Washington, D.C., and a graduate semester in economics at the University of Iowa.
Well regarded as a hardworking diplomat and businessman, Mr. Anderson owes his success to his ability to express himself cogently and honestly, even while dealing with foreign political, labor and business leaders.
