Ms. Greene is a recognized public official in the state of Florida who formerly spent 35 years teaching for the Palm Beach Public Schools between 1965 and 2000. During her years in education, she also taught at the collegiate level as a communications instructor at Palm Beach Community College in Lake Worth, Florida, for four years beginning in 1983. Entering public office in 1987, Ms. Greene established quite a name for herself, serving as vice mayor of the Town of Mangonia Park, Florida, for five years and then as mayor from 1992 to 2000. Elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000, she served in that capacity for nine years. In 2011, she was elected the Palm Beach County Commissioner. Today, Ms. Greene continues to positively impact her local community as a councilperson for the Town of Mangonia Park Town Council.
As an extension of her political career, Ms. Greene founded the non-profit organization, the Palm Beach County Caucus of Black Elected Officials, Inc., in 2003. In existence for over a decade, it sought to promote black leadership, award scholarships and help citizens better understand the system. She was also active as a member of the Big Sisters Big Brothers of West Palm Beach.
In 2016, Ms. Greene published her first book, titled "From the Coal Mines to the Board Room: Reflections on the Rise of Black Politicians in Palm Beach County." Released through Emerge Publishing Group, LLC, the book recounts her life growing up as the daughter of an African American coal miner from Alabama during the 1940s and 1950s and the racism, poverty and exploitation that she and her family endured. Ms. Greene was born in Quinton, Alabama. Studying locally at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, she acquired a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1965. She later achieved a Master of Arts Degree at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1973.
Ms. Greene has been active with numerous professional organizations, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Business and Professional Women, the Urban League, the Gold Coast Voters League and the Enterprise Florida Innovative Partnership. She is also a member and former secretary of the Florida Conference of Black State Legislature.
Honored with several awards over the years, Ms. Greene was named Role Model of the Year by the Business and Professional Women of West Palm Beach, and received a Leadership Award from the Democratic Black Caucus and an Outstanding Legislator Award from the Florida Academy of Trial Lawyers, and, among other recognitions, was featured in The Palm Beacher as One of the 40 Most Powerful People in Palm Beach County. Additionally, The Addie L. Greene Public Park, a municipal park in Mangonia Park, was named in her honor.
