After acquiring his undergraduate degree, Dr. von Tiesenhausen began a long and successful career in education as a secondary teacher for Huntsville City Schools. Enjoying 30 incredible years in his role, he was also active as the director of the drama department from 1974 to 1988. Dr. von Tiesenhausen then went on to form Saint John Paul II Catholic School in Huntsville in 1996, one year prior to his retirement from public school education. As co-founder and academic dean of his co-educational college preparatory school, he was instrumental in launching the school to the position it stands in today. Dr. von Tiesenhausen remained in his positions for eight years before fully retiring, and the school remains the only Catholic parochial school for ninth through 12th grade in the greater Huntsville area.
As an extension of his career, Dr. von Tiesenhausen taught at the college level for many years as well. He spent one year as an instructor at Oakwood College during 1967, followed by another three years at Alabama Christian College between 1975 and 1978 and 12 years at Calhoun Community College between 1983 and 1995. He also became a faculty member at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1986, where he taught as an adjunct professor on campus for 27 years. Apart from teaching, Dr. von Tiesenhausen leveraged his expertise as a consultant for a short time, as an organist for Redstone Arsenal Post Chapel, the North Hills Christian Church, the Church of the Visitation, and the Holy Spirit Catholic Church between 1965 and 1975, and demonstrated his creativity by co-authoring a musical play, titled "The Time Box," in 1975.
Passionate about public service, Dr. von Tiesenhausen was involved with the Decatur Civic Theater in Decatur, Alabama, as vice president from 1968 to 1972. He later served on the Alabama State Teachers Forum from 1993 to 1998.
Dr. von Tiesenhausen was born in Heberndorf, Germany. Moving to the United States as a child, he studied extensively after high school, achieving a Bachelor of Science in English, German and Latin at the University of Alabama in 1967, followed by a Master of Art in English in 1973 and Specialist in Education degree in 1979, all at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University. He also achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in instructional leadership at the University of Alabama in 1985. He holds a secondary teaching certificate.
Supporting his academic career, Dr. Von Tiesenhausen has long been a member of the Huntsville Education Association, the Alabama Education Association and the National Education Association. He more recently joined the Alabama Retired Educators Association as well. In 1973, Dr. von Tiesenhausen was named an Outstanding Young Educator by the Jaycees. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been cited in the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
