Now retired from a successful career in public school education, Dr. Johnson taught for the Board of Education in Pine Hill, New Jersey, and later as a Language Arts educator for the Board of Education in Passaic. Teaching at both the elementary and secondary level, she very much enjoyed her time spent in the classroom. At the conclusion of her teaching career, she began focusing much of her efforts on religious services. She was notably a workshop facilitator for True Love Waits and was involved with various women's conferences and retreats. Dr. Johnson's teachings extended outside the typical classroom for many years as well. She excelled as a volunteer Sunday school teacher for Jones Memorial Baptist Church in Philadelphia, the Union Baptist Church in Passaic and was a Youth Director for the Jones Memorial Baptist Church. Dr. Johnson was likewise responsible for developing and coordinating a six-week summer camp program at Union Baptist Church and also served as a director, organizer and teacher for several vacation bible school programs.
In 1977, Dr. Johnson achieved a Bachelor of Science in education at Temple University. Having received the Call to the gospel ministry, she then pursued additional studies in religion, acquiring a Master of Divinity at New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 2000. She is presently a 2020/2021 doctoral candidate of Philosophy in Biblical Studies and Theology at Andersonville Theological Seminary. In addition to her Pastoral Care and Counseling preparation at Union Theological Seminary, New York, NY, she is a certified teacher in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Among Dr. Johnson's professional memberships, she has been active with the International Association of Ministers Wives & Ministers Widows Inc., where she coordinated its National Stand Against Violence while being the Chairperson of the Preacher's Kids (PK's). She is also a member of the Minister's Wives & Minister's Widows of New Jersey. Furthermore, she has served as a Board Member of the Interdenominational Women's Conference founded by the Late Rev. Dr. Arlene Gilmore, and has served as President of the Women's Auxiliary of the North Jersey District Missionary Baptist Association.
Dr. Johnson has accrued numerous awards throughout her storied career, and particularly for her civic contributions. To wit, she received an Award of Appreciation from Jones Memorial Baptist Church in 1980, a Member of the Year Award from Union Baptist Church in 1992, a Mayor's Award for Outstanding Civic Contributions in Paterson in 1997, a Citation of Commendation and Praise from the 35th New Jersey Legislative District during the same year, a Muriel Lemon Johnson Award from the International Interdenominational Ministers' Wives and Minister's Widows Inc. in 2001, and was the United Passaic Organization's 30th Anniversary Award Honoree. She was also recognized with a 21st Century Award of Achievement by the International Biographical Center, Cambridge, England in 2008 and as an International Professional of the Year. At the age of sixteen, she was presented to society as a debutante at the Debutante Ball sponsored by the Philadelphia Chapter of the Eastern Stars. Dr. Johnson was listed in 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century in 2008) and has been included in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. She has spent the majority of her life in Philadelphia, PA and Passaic, NJ.
