From a young age, Mr. Degitz-Fries developed a love for mathematics. Although he did not initially plan to pursue a career in education, he was inspired by his father, a high school show choir teacher, and his mother, a preschool and kindergarten teacher. While studying in college, he realized that he could combine his love for mathematics and theatre by becoming an educator. A National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) in adolescence and young adulthood mathematics, Mr. Degitz-Fries earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Master of Arts in Mathematics Education from Maryville University, St. Louis, MO.
Mr. Degitz-Fries currently serves as a mathematics teacher at Parkway South High School and an adjunct professor in the advanced credit program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Outside of his primary teaching duties, he both initiated and sponsors Mu Alpha Theta (Math Club) & the Scholar Bowl team. He also sponsors the National Honor Society (NHS). For over 20 years, Mr. Degitz-Fries has been renowned in his community as the "Parkway Singing Math Teacher." Mr. Degitz-Fries has written over 70 math songs to help his students learn and remember mathematical theorems and has produced videos to help students as well as entertain parents and community members. One of his videos has gained more than one million views on the internet.
Additionally, he works as the director of the Voices4Hymn Praise Team at Community Christian Church and as an independent consultant for Arbonne International. He performs in St. Louis musical theater and is represented by Azalea Agency, booking roles as a print and runway model, voice over actor, and commercial actor. Throughout his career, he has appeared in movies such as Up in the Air and The Layover. He has also performed in many musicals, runway shows, and television commercials, and has been nominated for every level of St. Louis Theatre Best Performance Awards.
For his exemplary efforts in education, Mr. Degitz-Fries was recognized as the Teacher of the Year by the Parkway School District and awarded the Robert Ferree Award for excellence in Mathematics Education. As a dedicated professional, he has been very proud to work as an educator and utilize his talents to help students.
