Dr. Klinefelter is an honor professor and regents' fellow emeritus at Texas A&M University in College Station. An expert in agricultural finance strategy with research interests in financial management and agribusiness, he began teaching on campus in 1979. During his career at the university, he notably established a successful program called Third Year TEPAP. He was also instrumental as a faculty member at the Graduate School of Banking in Boulder, Colorado, the Graduate School of Agricultural Banking in Ames, Iowa, and the Ferguson Agri-Management Institute.
Prior to becoming established at Texas A&M University, Dr. Klinefelter spent nearly a decade with Marine Bank as a commercial loan officer, the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank as a director of marketing, training and financial services, and Farm Credit Capital Corporation as the vice president of field operations. His distinguished record of leadership also included serving as a National Science Foundation fellow at the University of Illinois between 1976 and 1979, writing for DTN, and serving on the board of AgTexas Farm Credit Services.
Dr. Klinefelter's decision to initially pursue banking was due to his grandfather's influence, who was a board director for a local bank. Dr. Klinefelter later began teaching at Lincoln Lang Community College after being invited by the dean of the college. Intrigued by academia, he was ultimately able to marry his interest in agricultural finance with education.
A prolific writer, Dr. Klinefelter co-authored "Coordinated Financial Statements for Agriculture" in 1978, with a third edition in 1989, "Financial Decisions: A Survival Handbook for Farmers" in 1982, "Farm Investment and Financial Analysis" in 1984 and "Recommendations of the Farm Financial Standards Task Force" in 1991. Dr. Klinefelter studied at Southern Illinois University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in agricultural economics in 1969. He soon after completed a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in agricultural economics at the University of Illinois in 1971 and 1979, respectively.
To support his career, Dr. Klinefelter has been aligned as a member of the American Agricultural Economics Association, where he notably received a Quality of Publications Communication Award in 1987. He is also a member and executive secretary of the Association of Agricultural Program Executives and director of the Executive Program for Agricultural Producers.
Honored multiple times for his expertise, Dr. Klinefelter received Superior Service Awards from the Texas AgriLIFE Extension in 1988 and 1992, Distinguished Faculty Achievement Awards from Texas A&M University Association of Former Students in 1998 and 2002, and Vice Chancellor's Awards of Excellence in 1997 and 2001. Among other accolades, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southern Agricultural Economics Association in 2005. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Klinefelter has been cited in the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
