NEW YORK, NY, February 16, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Pomy Ketema, Esq., has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
With an accomplished legal career that began nearly 20 years ago, Ms. Ketema has flourished with Baker McKenzie in New York as Counsel. Specializing in various tax aspects with respect to U.S. domestic and cross-border mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures, her expertise in global transactions and trade also includes a focus on foreign direct investments. As an active member of the firm's Africa Advisory Board and Africa Tax Group governance team, she works with the firm's leadership to build and strengthen its Africa practice, positioning it to offer world-class services to clients in a fast emerging region of the world. As part of her business law practice, Ms. Ketema advises clients on legal affairs and operations in African countries, including international clients seeking to establish businesses across the continent. Ms. Ketema notably speaks fluent Amharic, which is an Afro-Asiatic language primarily spoken in Ethiopia.
Ms. Ketema's tenure in law began as a senior associate at Felhaber Larson where she handled a wide range of tax matters, and corporate and real estate transactions. She continued her career at Dorsey & Whitney LLP in Minneapolis where she focused on tax, mergers and acquisitions, and executive compensation. Starting in 2010, she held a position as senior counsel in the legal department of Flint Hills Resources, a subsidiary of Koch Industries Inc. that specializes in the oil and gas and biofuels industry in Wichita, Kansas. In 2018, Ms. Ketema spent time on the African continent touring agencies and studying the legal framework to get a better handle on cross-border considerations arising in investments and trade involving frontier markets. That experience was instrumental as she launched Synia Consulting in 2019, where she realized her long-held dream of managing a firm based in New York that focused on foreign direct investments flowing into Africa. It marked the beginning of the next chapter of her career.
Ms. Ketema has continued to expand her reach through publications and speaking engagements to serve as a leader in African cross-border transactions. In her latest publication, which has been widely circulated, she discusses the opportunities that the newly launched African Continental Free Trade Area offers to multinationals. Ms. Ketema attributes her venture into this largely untapped legal market to her unrelenting curiosity and entrepreneurial spirit. By allowing her strong interest in business, finance, and taxation to grow and thrive, she continues to excel and has no regrets about the career choices that she has made.
Apart from her legal responsibilities, Ms. Ketema is currently a member of the New York State Bar Association, International Section, and has in the past served on the Tax Institute planning committee of the Minnesota State Bar Association. She has taught courses as an adjunct faculty member at William Mitchell College of Law from 2008 to 2009 and the University of Minnesota Law School in 2010. She has served on the board of directors of nonprofit organizations, namely the Minnesota Humanities Center and Berhan Education Fund, both of which focused on the education of youth. She has also provided her expertise as a presenter and co-presenter at numerous conferences. Likewise, Ms. Ketema has contributed works in several professional journals and other legal publications.
Ms. Ketema prepared for her career by earning a Bachelor of Arts in international business and marketing, cum laude, at the University of St. Thomas in 1994. She later obtained a law degree, cum laude, and a Master of Business Taxation at the University of Minnesota in 1999 and 2001, respectively. Ms. Ketema has been admitted to practice law by the Supreme Courts of New York and Minnesota, and the U.S. Tax Court.
