ATHENS, GA, February 16, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to honor Dr. Michael Covington with inclusion in Who's Who in the World. An accomplished listee, Michael Covington celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Backed by decades of professional excellence in the sciences, Dr. Covington currently excels as a senior research scientist with FormFree Inc., with which he initially worked as a contract researcher. In his present position, he also continues to channel his expertise in artificial intelligence technology to the financial sector. Alongside his efforts with FormFree, Dr. Covington parlays his knowledge to students and staff at the University of Georgia, with which he serves as a senior research scientist emeritus.
Dr. Covington previously held several academic positions with the University of Georgia, rising from research associate to senior research scientist and associate director at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence, as well as adjunct professor of computer science and adjunct member of the linguistics faculty. In addition to his work with the University of Georgia, he has also consulted for Strategic Analysis Enterprises, Inc., Coraid, Inc., JTB Communications, GlaxoSmithKline and a number of confidential clients. Inspired to remain aware of ongoing changes in his industry, Dr. Covington is an IEEE Senior Member.
Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Covington earned a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from the University of Georgia, from which he graduated as co-valedictorian in 1977. He subsequently obtained a Master of Philosophy from Cambridge University in 1978 and a Doctor of Philosophy from Yale University in 1982. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Covington completed a postdoctoral fellowship in linguistics at the University of Southern California in 1984.
Throughout his storied career, Dr. Covington has contributed to numerous publications in editing and writing capacities, pursuing several side interests as well as his main profession. His main scholarly books are Syntactic Theory in the High Middle Ages (about how medieval philosophers analyzed sentence structure) and Natural Language Processing for Prolog Programmers (how the same thing is done with computers today). Meanwhile he also wrote well-known books about his hobby (Astrophotography for the Amateur and Digital SLR Astrophotography) and large numbers of magazine articles about computers and electronics.
Dr. Covington was an early advocate of dependency parsing, a method of getting computers to recognize sentence structure in human languages, now widely used by companies such as Google. He is glad to have been able to fight a dreaded disease (schizophrenia, by applying computers to measuring patients' speech problems), prevent a repeat of the Recession of 2008 (through his current work at FormFree), and help prevent war (through his work with a defense contractor). His work has been supported by Hewlett-Packard, the National Science Foundation, and GlaxoSmithKline, to name a few. Since the mid-1990s, he has also been recognized in such publications as Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in America, and now Who's Who in the World. In the coming years, Dr. Covington intends to continue discovering innovative applications for artificial intelligence.
